Jones Park Pickleball Courts Ribbon-Cutting August 22

Join us for the opening of ten pickleball courts in Jones Park Tuesday, August 22 at 10 a.m. Learn about this popular new sport and take a lesson.

Five courts are north and south of a central patio with a shade structure, drinking fountain, and electrical outlets. The five courts to the south of the patio are lighted. The courts are located just east of the parking lot that used to serve the golf course at 2901 Fruitland Boulevard SW. Access the courts via Fruitland Boulevard SW. The Jones Park road is closed to through traffic at the maintenance shop.

YARDY Cart Compost Reminders

The Solid Waste & Recycling division reminds residents that YARDY carts can be used year-round to collect yard waste, such as leaves and twigs, as well as food compost, such as fruit and vegetable peelings, plain rice/pasta and bread, coffee grounds and filters, and loose-leaf tea.

The YARDY cart weight limit is 200 pounds. If the cart is too heavy, it can damage the collection vehicle and cause injury to our City staff.

Please do not place the following items in your YARDY cart:

  • Branches or logs over 5-inches in diameter
  • Painted or treated wood
  • Dirt or soil
  • Plastic bags or plastic materials of any kind
  • Coals or embers from grills or fires

Look for YARDY on the cover of the latest edition of Our CR in mailboxes this week!

LightLine Loop Survey

The City is seeking public input on key elements of the LightLine Loop project through an online visioning survey. The survey seeks feedback on residents' preferences of the look and composition of four major amenities in the project: roundhouse, woonerf (shared-space street), pedestrian promenade, and gateway signage.

The LightLine Loop consists of trails in the Czech Village and New Bohemia area. The LightLine Loop Project implements key amenities adjacent to these trails as planned in the Czech Village/New Bohemia Area Action Plan, which was approved by the City Council in 2019. This project is funded, in part, by a Destination Iowa Grant. The space is being reimagined as a vibrant, community gathering place, ideal for residents and visitors alike.

All feedback gathered from the survey will be shared with the

project design team as they begin developing concepts for the area later this summer.

Cedar Rapids Police & Fire Departments Support Back-to-School Events

Cedar Rapids Police and Cedar Rapids Fire Departments are marking the end of summer by supporting a variety of back-to-school events across the City. Both departments took part in the Parks & Recreation Department’s Back-2-School Bash at Cherry Hill Park where students received school supplies, played in bouncy houses, and petted animals from Old MacDonald’s Farm.

For the Police and Firefighters, it was a time to discuss safety and create better relationships with young people. There have also been events at Prairie Middle School, supported by the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Charity, and other efforts to help those who need extra assistance as they get families ready for the first day of school.

Behind the scenes, School Resource Officers have met with many Cedar Rapids Community School District staff members to give them training on school-year safety techniques.
