Calabasas Earns Its First Helen Putnam Award for Excellence

The City of Calabasas has earned its first Helen Putnam Award for Excellence from the League of California Cities, marking an exciting milestone for our community. Only a handful of California’s 483 cities receive these awards each year. The City was recognized for its partnership with Emergency Preparedness in Calabasas (EPIC), a Fire Safe Council, and the work the two organizations have done together to strengthen emergency preparedness and community resilience. The award was formally presented to the City earlier this week, at the League of California Cities’ annual Conference and Expo in Anaheim. Since partnering in 2022, the City and EPIC have expanded Firewise USA participation throughout Calabasas; distributed more than 800 emergency radios; developed an emergency preparedness app with off-line resources; and launched a home-hardening rebate program. The award is a meaningful recognition of the dedication of City staff, EPIC volunteers, and community members who have worked together to help better prepare Calabasas for emergencies.

Be Ready for What Comes Next: Drought and Disaster Recovery

As National Preparedness Month nears its end, this week’s focus is on drought and disaster recovery. Southern California’s history of drought, and its impacts on our community, remind us that preparedness extends beyond immediate emergencies. It also means planning for hazards that develop over time and considering what your household may need in the days and weeks following a disaster.

Reliable information is an important part of that preparation. Genasys provides Calabasas-specific emergency information, including evacuation warnings, orders, and important safety updates that keep residents informed as conditions change. Residents are encouraged to sign up now so they are connected when important information is needed. Sign up, be in the know, and be ready to go.

Preparedness also continues after the immediate danger has passed. Knowing what resources are available, keeping important information accessible, and having a plan for recovery can help households navigate what comes next.

Reminder: Celebrate 60 Years of the Leonis Adobe Museum

The Leonis Adobe Museum will celebrate 60 years of preserving and sharing local history tomorrow, September 26th, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. The evening will include dinner, live music and dancing, live and silent auctions, a special documentary premiere, a photo booth, and more. As Los Angeles City Historic-Cultural Monument No. 1, the Leonis Adobe Museum has played an important role in preserving the history of our community for generations. General admission is $75, with discounted admission of $65 for Museum Members.

You’re Invited: 50th Anniversary of Malibu Creek State Park 

Malibu Creek State Park will celebrate its 50th anniversary with Stories Under the Stars tomorrow, September 26th, from 4:30 to 10 p.m. The community is invited to commemorate this milestone with an evening of live music, food trucks, crafts, and activities, along with opportunities to learn more about the park’s natural and cultural history. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., tribal members, scientists, historians and others will share stories about the park, followed by a Star Party with the Los Angeles Astronomical Society at 8 p.m. This anniversary celebration is an opportunity to come together and recognize the history, natural beauty, and community connections that have made Malibu Creek State Park a special part of our region for 50 years.

Teens: Earn Community Service Hours at the Pumpkin Festival

The City of Calabasas is seeking teen volunteers in grades 9 through 12 to help with this year’s Pumpkin Festival. Volunteer shifts are available on Saturday, October 17th, and Sunday, October 18th. Saturday shift volunteers can help with festival set-up and decorating, while Sunday volunteers will help with attraction lines, photo stations, activity booths, and other festival activities. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity for teens to get involved in the community, contribute to one of Calabasas’ signature events, and earn community service hours. Teen volunteers will also receive a letter from the City verifying their completed service hours.

What’s Next: West Village at Calabasas Project 

The West Village at Calabasas Project, located just west of the intersection of Las Virgenes and Agoura Roads, will include the development of 70 single-family detached condominium units. Grading was originally expected to begin in September, but the start date has been delayed. Residents may notice activity in the area once work begins, and more updates will be shared as the project moves forward.

Tips to Keep Calabasas Roads Safe



This week marks Child Passenger Safety Week, followed by National Seat Check Saturday on September 26th, providing an important reminder about keeping children and families safe on the road. The Los Angeles County Fire Department offers several bicycle and vehicle safety recommendations, including ensuring children younger than eight ride in the back seat in a car seat or booster seat and that everyone in a moving vehicle wears a seat belt.



Road safety depends on bicyclists and motorists doing their part to safely share the road. LA County Fire recommends that bicyclists follow traffic signs and roadway markings, ride in the same direction as traffic, use hand signals, remain alert, and wear a helmet. Motorists are encouraged to avoid distracted driving and use extra caution during wet weather. Taking a few extra precautions can help keep Calabasas roads safer for everyone. Celebrating Keeping Calabasas Green for Generations to Come



National Green City Day on October 1st is an opportunity to recognize the importance of building more sustainable communities and highlight the work taking place here in Calabasas. As a Green City, Calabasas stays committed to long-term sustainability through environmentally responsible development, improvements to City facilities, and educational outreach. These efforts help protect our environment, reduce emissions, and make responsible use of natural resources while considering affordability for the community.
