Latest News and Events from the City of Calabasas

Three Councilmembers Appointed to New Terms; November Election Cancelled

At its August 19 special meeting, the Calabasas City Council voted unanimously, 5–0, to appoint incumbent Councilmembers Ed Albrecht, James Bozajian and David Shapiro to new four-year terms and cancel the November 3, 2026, General Municipal Election. The appointments followed a nomination period in which the three incumbents were the only ones who filed to run for the three available Council seats.

Under California Elections Code Section 10229, the Council was permitted to appoint the three qualified candidates in lieu of holding an election. City staff has confirmed that all statutory requirements have been satisfied, including publication of the required notices on August 13 and 14. Each Councilmember will serve a full four-year term, the same as if elected by voters in November. The City will save approximately $100,000 by not having to pay Los Angeles County to include our elections on the General Election ballot.

Protecting Wildlife and Keeping Calabasas Clean

Calabasas continues to strengthen its commitment to protecting the environment, local wildlife, and the community. At its August 12 meeting, the City Council unanimously approved expanded restrictions on commercial rodenticides and glue traps throughout Calabasas. The action builds on the City’s ongoing efforts to protect wildlife and pets from the harmful effects of toxic pest-control products. The Council also unanimously pledged the City’s participation in Caltrans’ Clean California Community Designation Program, recognizing ongoing efforts to reduce litter, encourage recycling, and promote sustainability. With many of the program’s criteria already in place, Calabasas is working toward official State recognition and potential future environmental grant opportunities.

Welcome to Calabasas, Craftsman’s Corner!

Following final approval of its annexation by the Los Angeles County Local Agency Formation Commission on August 17, Craftsman’s Corner is now officially part of the City of Calabasas. The annexation brings residents, property owners and businesses into Calabasas local government, giving them the opportunity to participate in City elections, public hearings, and local decision-making while gaining access to City programs, information, and services. Most everyday services, including law enforcement, fire protection, schools, utilities, waste hauling, addresses, and postal service, will remain unchanged, and property taxes will not change as a result of the annexation.

Wedged between the cities of Calabasas and Hidden Hills, Craftsman’s Corner encompasses an area of 164 acres (0.26 square miles). Los Angeles County excluded Craftsman’s Corner from the City when Calabasas incorporated in 1991. For the past 35 years, we have been trying to rectify that mistake. It is one of the oldest sections of Calabasas, with its name deriving from the fact that many of its early settlers were craftsmen and artisans.

Ongoing Construction near the Intersection of Calabasas Road and Mureau Road

Construction is ongoing for the West Calabasas Road Roundabout near the intersection of

Calabasas Road and Mureau Road. The project will improve traffic flow and pedestrian access by constructing a one-lane roundabout with sidewalks, curb and gutter, and new pavement. During construction, traffic at the intersection is reduced to one lane for both directions, with portable traffic control systems in place to safely direct vehicles. Construction is expected to continue through February 2027, so please expect delays and plan ahead when traveling through the area.

National Preparedness Month in Partnership with Genasys

September is National Preparedness Month, an important reminder to prepare before an emergency happens. In Calabasas, the 2018 Woolsey Fire reinforced the importance of community preparedness and helped shape the City’s continued efforts to give residents the tools and information they need to stay safe. Since then, Calabasas has continued strengthening its approach to emergency preparedness, while more recent events like the Kenneth and Jasper fires and periods of extreme heat remind us why being ready remains important.

A key part of that preparation is Genasys, the City’s emergency notification system. During a major emergency, first responders are working across the community, and keeping residents informed helps everyone play a role in staying safe and looking out for one another. Genasys provides Calabasas-specific information, including evacuation warnings, orders and important safety updates, so residents have reliable information to help them respond when needed. Sign up, be in the know and be ready to go.

Preparedness starts before an emergency. Do not wait until there is a wildfire to make an evacuation plan or extreme heat arrives to think about how you will stay cool and safe.
