CHINO, CA (July 4, 2026) -- On Saturday, July 4, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Chino Police Department officers responded to a reported vehicle fire in the 5600 block of D Street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that an explosion had occurred and several people had been injured. Officers immediately rendered first aid to multiple victims who sustained serious injuries. As a result of the explosion, a nearby vehicle also became engulfed in flames.
Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe a large quantity of fireworks ignited, causing the explosion.
Three adult victims were transported to local hospitals with severe injuries. One of the victims, a female in her twenties, later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Her identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin by the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner.
The remaining two adult victims, whose identities are also being withheld at this time, sustained serious injuries and are expected to survive. A fourth victim, a juvenile, was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation and has since been released to a parent or guardian.
During the investigation, Derion Tradon James Jr., a 28-year-old Hesperia resident, was detained at the scene and later booked at the West Valley Detention Center for Penal Code section 192(b), involuntary manslaughter. The case will be submitted to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The Chino Police Department is leading the criminal investigation. The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner will conduct the death investigation, and the Ontario Fire Department Bomb Squad is assisting with the explosives-related portion of the investigation.
Investigators and fire personnel remain at the scene to ensure the area is safe and to evaluate any remaining fireworks, debris, or related hazards. Several roadways in the area remain closed while investigators conclude their investigation.
