Taste of the Fair: Oct. 9-11, 16-18
|
While this year's Cumming Country Fair & Festival had to be cancelled due to continued COVID-19 concerns coupled with the event's vast magnitude, City leaders still wanted the community to be able to enjoy one facet of the fair: the FOOD! Thus, Taste of the Fair was born.
This unique drive-through food service will be offered Oct. 9-11 and 16-18 at the Fairgrounds from 4-8 p.m. on Fridays and noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays. Patrons will drive through the one-way fair food route, decide if they would prefer to use in-car or walk-up service, and then park in the appropriate designated area. Patrons can take their food home, eat in their vehicles, or eat on the grounds (although on-site seating will be minimal to allow for social distancing). There are no admission or parking fees for this event.
Many fair favorites, such as turkey legs, corn dogs, funnel cakes, and fried Oreos, will be available! For complete information about Taste of the Fair - including map, complete menus, COVID-19 safety measures, and FAQs - click here.

House of Four Scythes at the Fairgrounds
|
|
With some logistical changes this year due to the pandemic, scare actors and crew are still ready to traumatize (in a most delightful way, of course) guests to the House of Four Scythes, all while raising money for the American Cancer Society.
House of Four Scythes will present nightly hauntings from 7 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 & 31. Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket booth, although only timed ticket entry will be allowed this year to avoid lines. Organizers recommend purchasing tickets online in advance as walk-ups will be directed to use the QR code or website to purchase tickets on their phone; no transactions will occur on site. For more about the entry process, click here.

Back the Blue Softball Tourney Raises $60,000 for B.A.D.G.E of Forsyth
|
|
Mayor Troy Brumbalow is passionate about many things, and on Sept. 26 he got to combine two of his biggest loves: softball and supporting our community's first responders.
In partnership with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, Fire Department, School System and County government, Mayor Brumbalow presented the first Back the Blue Softball Tournament, which is planned to be held annually. During this free community event, the five entities battled each other through several rounds of softball all to raise money for B.A.D.G.E. of Forsyth, a non-profit that provides support to employees of Forsyth County's service organizations.
The event got started with opening ceremonies featuring the Sheriff & Fire Department Honor Guard, as well as an opening pitch by Cumming's "honorary mayor," 11-year-old Charlie Westbrook. Several rounds of play were held, and when the dust settled the City of Cumming and Forsyth County Schools teams battled it out for top honors during the championship game. The mayor's team was the ultimate victor in the final round, and the City of Cumming will get to keep the coveted Back the Blue trophy until next year's tournament.
While the mayor's team won this year's trophy, the ultimate Back the Blue winner was B.A.D.G.E. of Forsyth. Thanks to generous donations from many businesses and individuals, the Back the Blue event was able to raise $60,000 for the organization, which has a mission of "giving back to employees of the Forsyth County Service Organizations that serve and protect us. To restore confidence, hope and peace of mind through financial and other support when unforeseen or unwelcome circumstances enter their lives."
Sponsors included: Beltan Properties; Dwell Design Studio, LLC; Vertical Earth, Inc; Engineering 303, LLC; Lamar Wakefield; Civil Engineering Consultants, Inc; Banks, Stubbs & McFarland, LLP; Beaver Toyota; Lance Jefferys/Crumbl Cookies; My Mercedes Place, Inc; A&L Quick Stop; Rhoads Group, Inc; Bryan Properties; Reid & Reid; Lanier Tire & Wheel; Foresite Group; Billy Howell Ford; Forsyth County Commissioner Molly Cooper; and B&B Awards, which donated the tournament trophy and plaques.
The City of Cumming would like to thank all the sponsors of Back the Blue, as well as all the tournament team members and everyone who came out to cheer on their favorite teams!

Childhood Cancer Awareness & Retired Educators Honored
|
During the Sept. 15th Regular City Council Meeting, Mayor Troy Brumbalow signed two proclamations. The first was in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness. Randi Green, a young lady who is a cancer survivor, was also honored by members of the American Cancer Society who were in attendance to accept the proclamation. Sept. 20-26 was recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Week in Support of the American Cancer Society's Schools vs. Cancer program. The second proclamation was presented to members of the Forsyth County Retired Educators Association in honor of Retired Educators Day on Nov. 1, 2020.
Mayor Troy Brumbalow also swore in a new member of the Cumming Police Department. William Knight comes to the Cumming Police Department with a decade of service with the Atlanta Police Department, most recently assigned to their motorcycle division. He will be working in the Cumming PD's Uniform Patrol Division.
In other business during the September work session and regular meeting, City Council:
- Accepted the low bid from Cooper & Company for steel work on the Cumming City Center's buildings A, B, C, D and M; accepted the low bid from Vertical Earth for concrete work on the Center's parking deck; and accepted the proposal from Cooper & Company for mechanical, electrical and plumbing construction with fire suppression for the Center's parking deck.
- Amended the City's intergovernmental agreement with Forsyth County Voter Registrations & Elections Office to allow use of the Cumming Park & Recreation Facility at 437 Pilgrim Mill Road as an early voting site for the General Election from Monday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 30.
- Amended the City's Zoning Ordinance in regards to livestock being kept under certain conditions. This amendment was needed following a request by Otwell Middle School to keep farm animals on school grounds for educational purposes.
- Appointed Scott Evans with the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce to serve as the private sector representative for Cumming and Forsyth County on the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission Board after the previous appointee resigned from this position.
- Accepted the low bid from Mid-South Builders, Inc. for installation of 12-inch water line along Hwy. 369 from Settingdown Creek to Dr. Bramblett Road. The project is a result of the Georgia Department of Transportation moving the Settingdown Creek Bridge on Hwy. 369 and operational issues with the Hendrix Road water tank.

Cumming Utilities: Help Prevent Sewer Spills
|
Did you know that you can easily do your part to help prevent sewer spills? Cumming Utilities, along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), encourage customers to NEVER flush wipes of any kind (even the ones labeled "Flushable" by manufacturers). These wipes do not break down in wastewater systems, and can clump together to create huge blockages in treatment systems that can lead to ruptures in lines, causing sewage spills.
Remember to only flush "The Three P's": Pee, Poo, and (Toilet) Paper. Items such as wet wipes (even the ones labeled "Flushable"), paper towels, napkins and rags should NEVER be flushed down the toilet, but rather tossed in the garbage to help prevent costly and potentially dangerous sewage spills, as well as possible home plumbing problems.
