| | Mayor & City Council Raise Colorectal Cancer Awareness | | During their Regular Meeting on March 18th, Mayor Troy Brumbalow and City Council presented a proclamation recognizing March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Jason W. Miller, Chief Operating Officer for GI North, and Kim Jette, a stage IV colorectal cancer survivor and GI North patient, accepted the proclamation. Jette and her family recently attended Fight Colorectal Cancer's annual advocacy day, "Call on Congress," to speak with members of Congress about setting aside funding within the Department of Defense's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program to create a Colorectal Cancer Research Program.
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, and is increasing in young people. It is now the leading cause of death in men under age 50 and second in women. It is recommended that everyone begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 45, and those with a family history should start even earlier.
City Council also took the following actions during the March Regular Meeting (the March Work Session was canceled, and Councilman Christopher Light was absent during the regular meeting so all votes were 4-0):
- Approved the low bid from Precision Momentum for installation of new hardwood flooring at the Dobbs Creek Recreation Center. Due to this large project, Dobbs Creek Recreation Center will need to be closed to the public for all programs and activities for up to 33 days starting around July 25th.
- Approved the City's general liability insurance proposal as recommended by the city's insurance broker, Apex Insurance.
- Authorized the City Administrator and department heads to work with their Forsyth County counterparts to update the Service Delivery Strategy, which is required by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs to be updated every 10 years.
