Food Truck Fridays Begin May 4; Portions of Pilgrim Mill and School Street to Close for Event |
On the heels of a successful Fridays at the Fairgrounds kickoff event on April 20, the City will now begin Food Truck Fridays on School Street, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 4. These events will be held monthly.
Food Truck Fridays will be a smaller-scale event with seven food trucks, a DJ, vendors, and art displays at the Brannon-Heard House by the Sawnee Association of the Arts. There is no admission fee and there will be no alcohol sales during Food Truck Fridays.
To accommodate this event,
portions of Pilgrim Mill Road and School Street will be closed from approximately 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on May 4 as follows:
- Pilgrim Mill Road from School Street to the intersection of Pirkle Ferry Road and State Route 9.
- School Street from Mason Street to Pilgrim Mill Road.
Ingram Avenue will remain open and will serve as a detour around the closed portions of Pilgrim Mill Road and School Street.
The
School Street Parking Deck (behind the Forsyth County Administration Building) will be open for event
parking and should be
accessed via Mason Street. The small portion of School Street from Dahlonega Highway to Mason Street will remain open for access to the parking deck.
Parking will also be available at:
- Cumming City Hall,
- Cumming Recreation Center and Creative Enterprises on Pilgrim Mill Road,
- In the Castleberry Road Parking Deck, and
- In downtown street spaces as availability allows.

Fridays at the Fairgrounds Event Draws About 4,000 People |
The City's inaugural Fridays at the Fairgrounds event on April 20 was a big success, drawing almost 4,000 visitors to the Cumming Fairgrounds.
Patrons enjoyed a variety of food from about a dozen food trucks, live music and dancing, hot air balloon rides, a giant cruise-in car show, and burnout contest. See more photos from the event on our

Fridays at the Fairgrounds is planned for every third Friday of the month during warm weather seasons from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Come join us on May 18 for more fun at the Fairgrounds!

Fairgrounds' Building Named in Honor of Retired Director

During their April regular meeting, Mayor and City Council honored former Fairgrounds Director Dave Horton, who retired at the end of March. Horton, who worked for the City of Cumming for 40 years in a variety of roles, was presented with a plaque in honor of his service.
Later in the meeting, council voted unanimously to rename the Fairground's exhibit hall "Horton Hall" in honor of his 20 years of service as the Cumming Fairgrounds Director.
Among other business during the April meeting and work session, City Council:
- Awarded the following bids for Utilities projects: Karr Road waterline relocation to Townley Construction; Kemp Drive low-pressure sewer line to Applewood Services Inc.; for a heavy duty service truck for Wastewater Maintenance from Jacky Jones Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.
- Approved leasing the Brannon-Heard House to the Sawnee Association of the Arts at a rate of $1,000/month, with details of the lease to be approved during a later meeting.
- Approved a move to Defyne Payments as the City's merchant services provider for credit card payments. The move will save customers of the City up to 2 percent in fees.
- Approved a change to the City's Code which eliminates the Residential Services Fee, which had been charged to some developments under the Multi-Use (MU) zoning category. Council also voted to remit these funds that had already been collected from residents of Marketplace Commons subdivision in exchange for the subdivision taking over sole responsibility for maintenance of certain infrastructure in the development for 10 years.
- Discussed the possibility of replacing the previous Multi-Use (MU) zoning category with a new Mixed Use (MX) District designed to accommodate commercial, institutional, office-professional, residential, or a combination thereof. Planning & Zoning staff with work with a contractor on how to update the Zoning Ordinance to accommodate the MX District.
- Appointed Jason May to serve as the City's appointment to the Board of Health, and Councilman Jason Evans to serve as the City's representative on the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission Council.
- Received copies of five proposals that had been received by the City Administrator for consideration of leasing and running the Cumming Playhouse. Council agreed to read and discuss them at a later meeting before making a decision.
- Approved a request to advertise for bids for a possible wall extension project at the Cumming Fairgrounds' Covered Arena. The project would add approximately 50 feet of usable grounds in front of the arena and could potentially be funded with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenue.
- Approved a resolution to allow the use of speed detection devices by law enforcement officials as a first step in the Department of Public Safety certification process.
- Approved purchase of three traffic lasers, which will be donated to the Georgia State Patrol for use in the City.

Join the City in Honoring Veterans May 25
The City of Cumming will host its Annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Friday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans War Memorial (in front of the Cumming Police Department).
As in years past, the highlight of this event will be the dedication of new flags in the the Avenue of Flags, which honors the memory of deceased veterans from our community. This year, eight new flags honoring 10 veterans will be added to the display, which currently includes more than 230 flags honoring over 275 veterans.
The event also includes a rifle salute from members of the Forsyth County Sheriff and Fire Department Honor Guard, patriotic music, and a dove release.

Aquatic Center: Lifeguards Wanted
The Cumming Aquatic Center is still hiring summer lifeguards. Those interested in becoming lifeguards at the Aquatic Center must be 15 years of age or older, and complete a required training course that involves online and in-person components.
The required training course will be offered May 4-6 and June 1-3, with online components that must be completed prior to the class dates. To learn more, contact Jeremy Howell at (770) 781-1781.

Cumming Utilities Offers Septic Tank Workshop
In conjunction with the Forsyth County Health Department, Cumming Utilities will present a free Septic Tank Maintenance Workshop on May 10 at 2 p.m. in the first-floor meeting room at Cumming City Hall (100 Main Street). The workshop will provide reference materials, and presenters will answer questions concerning the topic or related issues.
