City of Edmonton introduces new safety signage for shared
e-scooter and e-bike riders
August 10, 2023

The City of Edmonton is introducing new temporary signage to reinforce safe habits when using shared e-scooters and e-bikes in the city. The signage helps promote the sharing of City pathways and bike lanes and enables Edmontonians to easily connect to the Discover YEG map to find the best routes to their destinations.

As more Edmontonians begin to use various modes of active transportation, the City wants to ensure people are aware of where to ride and where to park safely. “We want everyone to ride with care while sharing common spaces and having fun,” said Suzzette Mellado, Program and Planning Lead, Traffic Operations. “The City’s goal is to promote safety for Edmontonians while supporting active and sustainable transportation options.”

The signs encourage riders to ring their bell to pass, be aware of others, yield to pedestrians and not block sidewalks and paths when parking. They also complement the work e-scooter and e-bike vendors Lime and Bird are doing to encourage safe riding habits. This includes providing education and awareness through vendors’ apps and limiting speeds in high pedestrian areas.

The City has also increased the number of e-scooter and e-bike parking corrals to provide riders with more designated parking spaces around Edmonton. A map of the corrals as well as Edmonton's active transportation network is available at edmonton.ca/Scooters.

Edmontonians who would like to report an area which could benefit from increased education can email bikesandscooters@edmonton.ca.
