Elmhurst Police Department Welcomes K9 Tommy
On October 13, 2023, EPD’s newest K9 “Tommy” and his handler, Officer Jason Giesel, graduated from the Kane County Sheriff’s Police K9 Academy. The K9 academy was an intensive 8-week training program to pair Officer Giesel and Tommy together as working partners. Tommy is a 22-month-old Dutch Shepherd/Malinois mix and is trained in tracking, drug detection, and handler protection.
Tommy is from the Netherlands and lives at home with Officer Giesel when they are not patrolling the streets of Elmhurst. Officer Giesel and Tommy join our current K9 team Ozy and Officer Brandt Cappitelli to staff the Elmhurst PD K9 Unit. Each K9 officer works an alternating schedule to provide consistent K9 services to our City each day. K9s Tommy and Ozy will train together once every two weeks to build a strong department team.

First Responders Memorial Plaza
Elmhurst firefighters are moving forward with a new piece of public sculpture created to memorialize the fateful day of 9/11. With a piece of rail given to the City from the twin towers, local sculptor, Jason Peot, will create a vibrant, moving, multi-faceted, 9/11 memorial to be placed near Fire Station #2 on York Street in Elmhurst. To complete this project, Elmhurst firefighters will need to raise approximately $150,000. Over the next several months, firefighters will be seeking support for this effort. Contributions of any amount will be sought during this time. It is hoped that this new sculpture can be created and installed by September 11, 2024. Donations can be made online here or in person at City Hall.

Imagine a Day Without Water
Imagine a Day Without Water is a national day of action bringing together communities and policymakers to highlight how water is essential, invaluable, and in need of investment. This year, the day of action will take place on October 19, 2023. When a community experiences water contamination or shortages, they have no water to drink, prepare meals, bathe their children, wash their hands, flush the toilet, or do laundry. Firefighters can’t put out fires, and farmers cannot water their crops. Hospitals would close without water. The Imagine A Day Without Water day of action embodies the pillars of One Water: water equity, water affordability, and sustainable, integrated water management. Sign the #OneWater Pledge and learn more ways to take action at imagineadaywithoutwater.org
