Message From Mayor Carlo DeMaria
Hello Everett,
As we welcome the month of April, it's time to embrace the renewal that comes with spring. The days are getting longer, flowers are beginning to bloom, and there's a fresh energy in the air. It's the perfect opportunity to reflect on new beginnings, growth, and the strength of our community.
We had some exciting events this month, such as the fourth annual G.I.R.L.S. Day event. This event is always a favorite because not only does it bring together so many public safety agencies, but it provides young women the opportunity to explore careers in these fields that are typically male-dominated. It was also great to celebrate Easter and the arrival of spring with so many of you at the Recreation Center. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the events we hosted in April and making them a tremendous success.
This month, we are excited to announce that registrations are now open for this year's Crimson Kids Summer Program. I encourage parents to check out what we have to offer in this program that is an excellent opportunity to keep children ages six through 13 engaged in fun activities during summer break. More information about this program can be found in this newsletter.
As always, don't hesitate to reach out to my office if you have any questions or concerns. My team and I are ready to assist you as best as we can. Also, please share this newsletter with friends, family, and neighbors. We hope this will be a great way for residents to stay engaged with what is happening in our community and informed about the programs, initiatives, and events we have to offer.
Thanks for reading!

The City of Everett recently hosted the Easter Spring Fling with hundreds of attendees gathered at the Recreation Center to celebrate Easter and the arrival of spring.
The annual event offered treats and fun activities for all to participate in. There were various activities for young attendees to enjoy like games and a live petting zoo to interact with animals like bunnies, goats, and ducklings in the Recreation Center.
The gym was turned into a fun house with plenty of treats and goodie bags, face painting, art activities, balloon creations, and memorable photos with the Easter Bunny. Davey the Clown kept children entertained with plenty of tricks and interactive fun. Toe Jam Puppet Band got children and families involved in their musical performance with props and fun songs. There was certainly no shortage of fun for all.

| | City of Everett Hosts Fourth Annual G.I.R.L.S. Day | | Over 100 girls ages 5 through 14 explored careers in public safety | | |
The City of Everett shared with over 100 girls ages 5-14 the power, importance, and strength of women in public safety at the fourth annual G.I.R.L.S. Day.
The event, which was in partnership with Alliance Security, Cataldo Ambulance Service, Everett Fire Department, Everett Police Department, Everett Public Schools, Massachusetts State Police, State Police Association for Massachusetts, and Tufts University Department of Public Safety, demonstrated to participants that there are women just like them who serve in public safety and that these careers are options for them too.
Grit, intelligence, resilience, leadership, and strength are the five themes that are prevalent throughout the event. Each group, separated by age range, participated in learning labs to view demonstrations and participate in activities like collecting clues, learning about fire equipment, a K-9 demonstration, an obstacle course, learning about what police officers, firefighters, and paramedics do, and more. Led by female police officers and firefighters, the groups cycled between different areas of Everett High School where participants would find various activities to learn about careers in public safety.
During the day, participants were provided with free lunch and also given swag bags to take home with them, which included various items from each partnering public safety department that collaborated on the event.
| | City of Everett Celebrates Women's History Month at Annual Dorothy Martin Long Luncheon | | Elected officials, City staff, and community members gathered at the Connolly Center for a luncheon | | |
The City of Everett recently joined with residents and elected officials to celebrate Women’s History Month at the second annual Dorothy Martin Long Women’s History Month Luncheon at the Connolly Center.
Named after Dorothy Martin Long, the luncheon celebrated the visions, voices, and impact of women as part of the City’s celebration of Women’s History Month. Long, who was a lifelong Everett resident, had a significant impact on the Everett community through public service and her passion for volunteering. Her volunteerism included work with organizations such as the Malden YMCA and Mystic Valley Elder Services, as well as Housing Families, Inc., where she dedicated 16 years tutoring homeless children. For those efforts, she was honored in 2018 at Gillette Stadium as a Patriot's Difference Maker. Long served on the Everett School Committee and was elected Commissioner of the Everett Charter Commission, where she led a team effort to re-write and modernize the City’s constitution. She also served on the City’s Diversity and Equity Task Force and was on the Board of Directors of the Devens School, along with being an Election Warden in the City of Everett.
The City of Everett’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Cathy Draine, who served as emcee of the event, was pleased to welcome this year’s keynote speaker Kristy Anderson Magras, who is currently a school counselor at Malden High School and a proud native of Malden. She has also worked with at-risk and housing-insecure youth and served as a mentor for the YWCA’s “WorkSmart” program, which helps ensure vulnerable students have access to quality post-secondary education and employment opportunities.
In addition to Magras, speakers at the luncheon included Mayor Carlo DeMaria and State Representative Joe McGonagle. During the ceremony, longtime Everett community member Jay Holt was recognized for recently being nominated by Rep. McGonagle and honored by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus at the annual “Black Excellence on the Hill” event at the State House. As the ceremony closed, attendees were invited to enjoy a free meal.
“Thank you all for a wonderful time at such an important event to ensure that Dorothy Martin Long's legacy will be forever remembered here in Everett,” said Mayor DeMaria. “I’d also like to thank everyone who helped make this event a successful celebration of the achievements and contributions of women to our community and around the world.”
| | Mayor DeMaria Seeks Public Input on Potential Stadium Project at Community Meeting April 30 | | All are welcome to share feedback on what they'd like to see in the community benefits agreement for the potential stadium project | | |
Mayor Carlo DeMaria is seeking public input from residents, businesses, community organizations, and any other stakeholders at a community meeting on Wednesday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m., at the Edward G. Connolly Center (90 Chelsea Street).
Those who attend will be able to view potential design plans and learn more about the potential stadium project in a presentation by representatives of the New England Revolution. Additionally, those who attend will have the opportunity to share with Mayor DeMaria and his team what community benefits they would like to see in the community benefits agreement from the potential stadium project.
“I’d like everyone who attends this meeting to assume that this project is definitely happening for the purpose of gathering as much feedback as we can about what our community would like to see in a community benefits agreement for this potential development,” said Mayor Carlo DeMaria. “This is just the beginning of what will be a vast public discussion, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Kraft Group to ensure this project is beneficial to the Everett community.”
Following the first official meeting between the City of Everett and the Kraft Group, it was determined that the May 1 deadline to negotiate a community benefits agreement was unattainable and that a mediator would assist in the process. Comments shared by attendees of this meeting may be considered as part of that negotiation.

The City of Everett held its Lunch and Learn for the month of March at Everett City Hall. This month’s program, titled “Cultural Understanding in the Workplace: Part III: Cultural Agility and Coexistence,” is the finale of a three-part series. This month’s program focused on cultural agility and coexistence and how it can be utilized in the workplace to enhance collaboration and the services that are provided by the City.
City staff were pleased to once again be joined by Bishop Regina Shearer, executive pastor of Zion Church Ministries. During the program, she engaged with City staff by encouraging attendees to think about their own cultural traditions and the traditional food they consume, while also recognizing the similarities and differences that are shared with other cultures.
Following sharing this information with each other, Bishop Shearer connected it to the importance of understanding and accepting the different cultural traditions of coworkers to foster mutual respect and coexistence to increase cohesiveness between teams. During the presentation, open dialogue between attendees was encouraged for the purpose of learning from each other to create better understanding amongst staff for the betterment of serving constituents.
Lunch and Learn is a monthly program created and moderated by the City of Everett’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department. The program is an opportunity for City staff to come together, share ideas and experiences, and discuss new topics while enjoying lunch. The series is a part of the City’s commitment to engage, educate, and elevate.
| | Happy Retirement, Captain O'Brien | | |
Fire Chief Joe Hickey recently joined alongside members of the Everett Fire Department (EFD) to wish Captain Tony O'Brien a happy and successful retirement after 39 years of service as a firefighter with the Everett Fire Department.
Born and raised in Everett, Tony is one of the most respected, admired, and loved people to have ever donned the uniform of the EFD, and we are truly going to miss his presence here. Tony is also a Deacon in his local parish and we know he will continue to impact lives in a positive way, just as he has done in all of his years here.
"As they say, 'they don't make 'em like him anymore,'" said Mayor Carlo DeMaria. "A true professional at his job and a true gentleman in life. On behalf of the City of Everett, I think I speak for all when I say thank you Captain O'Brien. We are forever grateful for your many years of service and friendship. Happy retirement!"

The City of Everett recently partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for a tree planting project.
To kick off the planting season, this project added 70 trees to open spaces at Everett Housing Authority (EHA) properties. DCR staff, along with the City of Everett’s Tree Warden Jacob St. Louis, planted trees that will eventually provide natural shade and environmental benefits in an urban community like Everett.
As urban tree canopies continue to decline due to environmental and urban pressures, this project will bring numerous benefits to residents. Some of the benefits these newly planted trees will provide include cooling neighborhoods, shading homes, saving money on air conditioning during the summer, decreasing storm water flooding, and helping remove carbon dioxide and other fine particulates that are caused by pollution from the air. Planting these new trees now will eventually lead to a more environmentally safer, cleaner, and cooler city.
As part of the Greening the Gateway Cities tree planting program, Everett residents are able to request a free tree to be planted where they live. For more information about this program, please visit www.maurbancanopy.org/sign-me-up or call Everett’s DCR Forester at 617-626-1459.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria is pleased to announce that the City of Everett has planned three days to place U.S. flags on the graves of veterans at Glenwood and Woodlawn cemeteries in preparation for Memorial Day.
The Mayor is asking residents to participate in the special task of honoring those who served in the United States military and are now laid to rest by helping place U.S. flags on veteran-marked graves. Volunteers will meet at the cemeteries to receive flags and disperse to find and place the flags beside veteran-marked graves.
“If you haven’t had the opportunity to join us for this effort before, it is a truly humbling experience to be reminded of the sacrifices that the men and women from our very own community were willing to make to defend our country and our freedom,” said Mayor DeMaria. “Placing flags is a small but important way for us to thank and remember the individuals who are no longer with us for their service.”
Volunteers are asked to meet at the following locations and times:
-
Glenwood Cemetery (Washington Avenue, Everett, MA 02149): Monday, May 12: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
