It's officially spring!

Today, March 20, marks the official first day of spring. Blooming crocuses and daffodils have been hinting at the change of seasons, but today the calendar confirms it - spring equinox is here at last!

Keep reading for a look at what's happening in Golden, and take a minute to  enjoy the sunshine before winter visits again for one last hurrah.

Current Projects
Concrete Replacement Program

Fasick has begun the annual Concrete Replacement program. The work consists of replacing damaged, deficient and trip hazards. ADA improvements are also addressed through the course of the work. Following is a list of streets in various stages of construction and clean-up:

2018 Concrete Replacement Schedule
Lane and Sidewalk Closures on Ford

There will be a construction fence up surrounding a project at 19th and Ford until mid-April.
There will be lane closures on 19th and Ford for the installation of new sidewalks. This will last until the beginning of next week.
CDOT to begin Rockfall Mitigation Project on US 6/Clear Creek Canyon

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor partner Apex Rockfall Mitigation will begin rockfall mitigation work on US 6/Clear Creek Canyon between Colorado Highway (CO) 93/CO 58 and CO 119 from mile points 260 to 272 in Jefferson and Clear Creek Counties.

In order to protect the safety of crews working on the project and the traveling public, daytime full closures of US 6/Clear Creek Canyon between CO 93/CO 58 and CO 119 must be conducted as rockfall mitigation cannot be done at night.

Motorists can expect daytime full closures of eastbound and westbound US 6/Clear Creek Canyon, Monday through Thursday, through the end of April with work hours as follows:
  • Monday through Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday: 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
During this time, there will be no parking or access for recreation use. Motorists can use I-70 as an alternate route during construction hours.
Leak Detection Project

Golden Utilities crews are doing a leak-detection project on water mains in the Mountain Ridge area. Data will be collected and evaluated by the end of the month.
Heritage Road Engineering Report Public Presentation
 
Golden contracted with the engineering firm Bohannan Huston to conduct an independent, third party review of the roundabouts on Heritage Road and the traffic calming on Eagle Ridge Drive.
A public presentation of their final engineering report will take place  April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shelton Elementary School Library, 420 Crawford St.

The engineering report is available for review in advance.
Gas Mains Replacement

Xcel Energy is replacing old gas mains on North Ford Street from 1st Street to Texas Street.  Patches made by the contractor are temporary. As soon as the contractor is done, the road will be repaired.  For questions, please contact Xcel directly at 800-895-4999.
Heritage Road at Apex Gulch work

The City of Golden continues construction to replace the culvert beneath Heritage Road at Apex Gulch.

Please download the map below for location and detours.  Construction began January 17, and should last a total of about 3 months, weather dependent. Local access to Colfax is by detour using 4th and Zeta.

Community Forum on School Safety
 
Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Jason Glass, will moderate a panel discussion on school safety tonight,  March 20, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Lakewood High School, 9700 W. 8 th Ave.

School security staff, local law enforcement, and other community partners will share information with the community on how we all work together on school safety. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues.  The meeting will also be  livestreamed.

Parks, Recreation and Museums Advisory Board Meeting
 
The Parks, Recreation and Museums Advisory Board will meet tonight , March 20 starting at 7 p.m. in the Golden Community Center, 1470 10th St.

At the meeting, the board will discuss National museum trends and how Golden History Museum is responding.

Planning Commission Study Session
 
The Planning Commission will meet Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 911 10th St.

At the study session, Planning Commission will learn more about affordable housing regulatory options.

City Council Regular Meeting
 
Golden City Council will meet Thursday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 911 10th St.

At the meeting, Council will consider the following:
  • The Mayor will offer a proclamation for the Helluva Service Event on April 7, 2018
  • Planning staff has initiated certain recommendations for Title 18 code changes pertaining to the cleanup and clarification of certain setback and lot frontage requirements found in Chapters 18.28 and 18.04.
  • The Historic Preservation Board has recommended a Historic Site Designation for the Boutwell Residence, located at 514 9th Street. City Council will conduct a public hearing on the request on March 22, 2018.
  • The Historic Preservation Board has recommended a Historic Site Designation for the Durham Tobacco Barn Mural, located at 514 9th Street. City Council will conduct a public hearing on the request on March 22, 2018.
  • City Council will consider a request to amend the Golden Municipal Code regarding changes to the Model Traffic Code, and Illegal Weapons. In addition, staff is seeking the implementation of Municipal ordinances prohibiting the use of air compression brakes within the City and implementing new Motor Vehicle Parking Regulations and Enforcement procedures.
  • An ordinance amending Chapter 10.40 and enacting Chapter 10.10 of the Golden Municipal Code Regarding Motor Vehicle Parking Regulations and Enforcement.
  • An ordinance amending section 5.01.070 of the Golden Municipal Code Pertaining to Specific Nuisances.
  • An ordinance amending Chapter 10.04 of the Golden Municipal Code Regarding The Model Traffic Code.
  • In accordance with Section 10.10.070 of the City of Golden's newly enacted administrative vehicle parking enforcement ordinance (Chapter 10.10 Golden Municipal Code), City Council will consider a request to establish the ordinance's operative fines and fees.

Do you know someone, or possibly a business, in our community that strives to create a greener Golden? Now is your chance to recognize these individuals by nominating them for a Golden Sustainability Award. The City of Golden's Community Sustainability Advisory Board (CSAB) is looking for nominations for the following categories:

* Community Group
 
Nominations are open through March 23. City Council will present the awards in celebration of Earth Day on April 12 during the regular City Council Meeting.

Fix a Leak Week
 
Fix a Leak Week
Household leaks can waste more than one trillion gallons of water annually nationwide, so each year HC3 and EPA's WaterSense team encourages community members to hunt down the drips during Fix a Leak Week. Mark your calendars for EPA's tenth annual Fix a Leak Week, March 19 through 25, 2018 - but remember that you can find and fix leaks inside and outside your home to save valuable water and money all year long.
