"THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST" NEXT IN LGBTQ FILM SERIES

The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, March 14 with THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST, a prize-winning film about how life changes for a teenage girl after she is sent to a gay-to-straight conversion camp.  The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.

Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center.  Feel free to bring your own "brown bag" supper and beverages.  Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South).  Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST (2018): After Cameron (Chloë Grace Moretz) is caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night, she is quickly shipped off to a conversion therapy center that treats teens "struggling with same-sex attraction."  At the facility, Cameron is subjected to outlandish discipline, dubious "de-gaying" methods, and earnest Christian rock songs, but this unusual setting also provides her with an unlikely gay community. For the first time, Cameron connects with peers, and she's able to find her place among fellow outcasts.  Directed by Desiree Akhavan.  "Loaded with terrific performances all around." (Toronto Star)  Winner of the 2018 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Films. (Not Rated)

Save the date, Thursday April 11, for WE THE ANIMALS (2018).  Manny, Joel, and Jonah tear their way through childhood. Their parents have a volatile relationship that makes and unmakes the family over and over, often leaving the boys fending for themselves. As their parents rip at one another, Manny and Joel harden and grow into versions of their father. With the brothers fractured, Jonah, the youngest, becomes increasingly aware of his desperate need to escape. Driven to the edge, Jonah embraces an imagined world all his own.  Directed by Jeremiah Zagar.  "Artful and frank, a rare combination." (San Diego Reader).  (Rated R.  Includes sexual content and strong language.  Adults only.)

Also save the date for our film on May 9, DO I SOUND GAY?  Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.

The LGBTQ Resource Center is a project of the non-profit Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library.  The Resource Center provides collections, services and events throughout the year to the local LGBTQ community, its friends and family.  Find out more about the Resource Center, the Circle of Friends and the Library on the web at www.mygulfport.us/gpl or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL

Community Outreach

The City of Gulfport currently installed 10 Mini Reef Systems at the Williams Pier. These new habitat features are constructed of fiberglass, PVC pipe, polypropylene rope and crab-trap floats. The mini-reefs function much like the mangrove systems that originally lined Florida's coast, providing places for filter-feeders to attach and small fish to hide. The small fish, in turn, attract larger fish. Filter-feeders like sea squirts move in shortly after the systems are install ed; in three years the habitats reach peak efficiency with oysters and other filter feeders. One of the most critical elements of the habitat is that they do not interfere with boats, so they're located under existing docks rather than creating obstacles.

* A Mini Reef can contain 150,000 animals from over 350 different species.
* A Mini Reef can clean on average 30,000 gallons of seawater everyday.
* 65 different species of fish have been found using Mini Reefs as home.
* Mini Reefs can raise over 60 stone crabs or blue crabs per year.
* Mini Reefs can raise over 50 spiny lobsters per year.
* The Mini Reef is built of materials that will last decades in a saltwater.
* 99.972% of Mini Reefs survived hurricane Irma without damage.
* Mini Reefs can now be found in 22 cities around the state.

Duke Energy to Commence Maintenance Tree Work in Upcoming Weeks

Duke Energy Crews will commence maintenance tree work along electric lines located within the City of Gulfport in the upcoming weeks. The targeted area is located in the Northwest area of the City. The tree crews will be cleaning up all debris associated with their maintenance activities. As a reminder, debris resulting from storm damage or other events unrelated to their maintenance activities is the responsibility of the homeowners. Part of the pruning activity will occur on lateral lines, some of which will require climbing in rear lot areas.

Trees are a leading cause of power outages. Duke Energy's progressive tree care practices help minimize outages during storms. Duke Energy Florida has been recognized for its tree care practices with the distinctive Tree Line USA designation from The National Arbor Day Foundation for 13 consecutive years. Duke works to balance the need for reliable electric power with sensitivity for the environment and tree health. Tree crews use a technique known as directional pruning, which is endorsed by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the International Society of Arboriculture. Qualified employees are supervised by certified arborists.

If you have any questions, please contact Public Works Director Tom Nicholls at 727-893-1089. To learn more about our tree care practices, please visit https://www.duke-energy.com/community/trees-and-rights-of-way.

2020 Census: How to Get Involved

The 2020 Census provides an opportunity for everyone to be counted. Tribal, state, and local governments; community based organizations; faith-based groups; schools; businesses; the media; and others play a key role in developing partners to educate and motivate residents to participate in the 2020 Census.

When community members are informed, they are more likely to respond to the census. Through collaborative partnerships, the U.S. Census Bureau and community leaders can reach the shared goal of counting EVERYONE in 2020.
The Complete Count Committees (CCC) program is key to creating awareness in communities all across the country.
  • CCCs utilize local knowledge, influence, and resources to educate communities and promote the census through locally
    based, targeted outreach efforts.
  • CCCs provide a vehicle for coordinating and nurturing cooperative efforts between tribal, state, and local governments; communities; and the Census Bureau.
  • CCCs help the Census Bureau get a complete count in 2020 through partnerships with local governments and community organizations.
WHO?
Tribal, state, and local governments work together with partners to form CCCs to promote and encourage response to the 2020 Census in their communities. Community-based organizations also establish CCCs that reach out to their constituents.

WHAT?
A CCC is comprised of a broad spectrum of government and community leaders from education, business, healthcare, and other community organizations. These trusted voices develop and implement a 2020 Census awareness campaign based upon their knowledge of the local community to encourage a response.

WHEN?
The formation of CCCs is happening NOW! Leaders are identifying budget resources and establishing local work plans. In 2020, they will implement the plans and lead their communities to a successful census count.

HOW?
It's up to all of us! CCCs know the best way to reach the community and raise awareness. Some activities could include:
  • Holding CCC kickoff meetings with media briefings.
  • Participating in Census rallies or parades.
  • Coordinating Census unity youth forums.
  • Hosting Interfaith breakfasts and weekend events.
  • Encouraging the use of Statistics in Schools classroom resources.
  • Incorporating census information in newsletters, social media posts, podcasts, mailings, and websites.
  • Helping recruit census workers when jobs become available.
WHY?
The primary goal of the 2020 Census is to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place. Community influencers create localized messaging that resonates with the population in their area. They are trusted voices and are best suited to mobilize community resources in an efficient manner.
