Beach Renourishment

| | What is a beach renourishment project?
A beach renourishment project is the process of adding sand to an eroding shoreline to help restore and protect the beach.
| Sand will be dredged from an offshore source and placed along the beach to replace material lost to waves, tides, storms, and natural coastal processes.
| Renourishment helps preserve recreational beach areas, supports wildlife habitat, and provides an important buffer that helps protect homes, infrastructure, and the community from storm impacts.
| On the Isle of Palms, up to 2.5 million cubic yards of material will be placed along 3.6 miles of beach.

When will construction begin?
|
Marinex will begin setting up their equipment during the first week of July, with sand pumping estimated to begin shortly after the 4th of July.
|
Construction is anticipated to progress at a rate of about 25,000 to 30,000 cubic yards per day, which equates to about 100-300 feet of progress per day.

Will the beach be closed?
No. The beach will remain accessible throughout this project. Sand walkovers will be constructed so that beach goers can cross pipes and access the ocean. Only limited areas near heavy machinery will be taped off. View an example of this from 2018.

Will the project be disturbing at night?
This project will require heavy machinery operating around the clock. Residents may notice some lights and backup alert sounds during nighttime hours.
|
Work is expected to progress at a rate of 100–300 feet per day, so any disturbances in your area will be temporary.
|
Why are we beginning construction during the summer?
Beginning construction during the summer proved to be the most cost-effective approach. By moving forward during this timeframe, the City saved approximately $10 million compared to alternative construction schedules.
|
Will the project impact sea turtles?
Nighttime monitoring will occur along the beach where construction is taking place to ensure the safety of female turtles attempting to nest.
|
Should a turtle be nesting on our beach, a buffer zone around the female will be imposed.
|
How can I stay up to date on progress?
Our Beach Page is updated almost daily, and will host a map with the live location of construction machinery and our latest estimates on time.

Beach Run
|
The IOP Beach Run returns on Saturday, July 25, 2026, with a 5K/10K Run and 5K Walk kicking off at 8:00 a.m., followed by Youth Fun Runs at 8:30 a.m. All events take place entirely on the flat, hard-packed beach near low tide, with the start and finish lines on the beach behind the Windjammer at 1008 Ocean Blvd.

Register online via Race Roster before noon on July 22nd, or in person at packet pickup on July 24th from 4:30–6:30 p.m. at the Windjammer.

Waterway Blvd Elevation Project
|
| | Quick Recap
The project will elevate and widen sections of the sidewalk along Waterway Boulevard to create a multi-use path. When combined with previous improvements along the golf course, the path will also serve as a flood barrier, helping to reduce the impacts of tidal flooding in the area.
|

Paving is complete from 21st to 29th Avenues, with the path ultimately extending all the way to 41st Avenue.
|
For the next couple of weeks, contractors will be focused on drainage improvements along 32nd Avenue. As that work crosses Waterway Blvd, expect a few brief road closures in the area.
|
Meanwhile, the team is coordinating with Comcast and AT&T on utility relocations along 32nd Avenue, which need to be completed before pathway construction continues.

Charleston County EMS & Their New Mobile Ambulance Bus
|
Our team spent time this week training with Charleston County EMS, building on our partnership and familiarizing ourselves with their new Mobile Ambulance Bus.
|
The Mobile Ambulance Bus is a specialized emergency response vehicle designed to transport multiple patients simultaneously during mass casualty incidents, large-scale evacuations, or major community events such as the Cooper River Bridge Run. The unit can transport up to 22 patients at once and includes 10 seated transport positions, 12 patient beds, wheelchair tie-downs, emergency medical equipment, and a Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure monitoring system.
|
Originally part of Charleston County Public Library's Library on Wheels program, the vehicle was fully converted into an EMS unit using a $199,051 grant from the SC Department of Public Health. It is available for deployment 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
|
We're proud to work alongside Charleston County EMS and to continue strengthening the regional emergency response capabilities that serve our community.

City of Isle of Palms Launches Rebranding Initiative
|
Earlier this year, the City issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a marketing firm to lead an exciting rebranding effort for Isle of Palms.
|
The initiative has two primary goals: positioning IOP as a premier family-friendly vacation destination. The rebrand will also introduce refreshed logos and a modernized color palette that better reflect the community we are today.
|
The response was remarkable, more than 30 firms from across the country and around the world submitted proposals. From that impressive pool, a top six were shortlisted. A winning firm is expected to be announced at the next ATAX Committee meeting.

What does a community look like to you? A technical definition is:
|
A community is a social unit (a group of people) with a shared socially-significant characteristic(s), being place, set of norms, culture, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area (e.g. a country, village, city, town, or neighborhood) or in virtual space through communication platforms.
|
Recently, there have been a few events around our island that have really punctuated to me the definition of community and made me proud to be able to represent IOP.
|
| • | First, there was the 3rd Annual Wild Child Triathlon where over 100 children ages 6-12 participated in a swim/bike/run event. Numerous volunteers helped guide the athletes around the courses on an early Sunday morning.
|
|
| • | Next, Cars in the Park at our Rec Center. 20+ cars from around the area showcasing residents and nonresidents alike displaying their pride and joy. It was a beautiful day, and our Rec Center team lined up numerous vendors and food trucks to provide our community with a great event.
|
|
| • | Lastly, on the sad side but wow what a show of support for the family by our community was the Celebration of Life event for Naish Kaloupek – our young resident that recently passed away after a battle with cancer. Over 400 attendees witnessed the lifelong effect this young man had on our city. Numerous speakers detailed their relationships with Naish and shared what he meant to them. You have undoubtedly noticed maroon ribbons on trees all over the island. This was a coordinated effort to show the family how much they mean to the community.

For those that attended one of these recent events thank you for coming together for the fun stuff and the support of loved ones. There will be other upcoming opportunities to come together as a community if you missed these.
