2020 Census
Census Day is April 1

Census Day is coming! Let's make Lee's Summit Count!

What is it? The census is a count of every person who lives in the United States and its territories. This includes people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens and noncitizens. It happens every ten years and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.

The census is important for you and for Lee's Summit.
Census data guides the distribution of $675 billion each year to communities nationwide for schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs.

  • Results give community leaders vital information to plan for the future and make decisions about where to build roads, hospitals, schools and emergency preparedness.

  • Census data is used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives.

You will be asked a few simple questions, such as age, sex and the number of people living in your home, including children. Answers are kept strictly confidential and are used for statistical purposes only.

Census postcards will be mailed to most households in March.
Quality Housing Program Launched

Development Services recently launched a new Quality Housing Program designed to improve the safety and maintenance of all housing in Lee’s Summit. The program takes a preventative approach to property code compliance through free onsite inspections, outreach and education, and the establishment of a certification program.

Certification . Property owners or tenants within the City can schedule a free inspection to certify a living unit meets identified standards. To assist those relocating to or within Lee's Summit, a list of active certified housing will be available on the City's website.

Education and Outreach . The City will partner with homeowner associations, nonprofits, neighborhood organizations or any group with a vested interest in maintaining and improving housing in Lee's Summit. Upon request, City employees are available to present to groups on topics such as City services and requirements. Presenters can speak directly to residents and property owners about concerns, help educate them about their responsibilities and provide guidance on property maintenance issues.
