BLACK COMMUNITY HEALTH STRENGTHS AND NEEDS ASSESSMENT UPDATE!

The Black Community Health Strengths and Needs Assessment Community Advisors Workgroup (BCHSNA) is a dedicated group of community members and organizational leaders committed to ensuring that the City’s actions better reflect the community’s strengths, assets, and priorities. They are Community-based Participatory Action Researchers (CPAR) representing the full diversity of Black Long Beach, including marginalized, under-resourced populations, and those traditionally excluded from policymaking and funding decisions.

The workgroup meets regularly to guide the design and implementation of the assessment. So far, they have achieved the following:

  1. Hosted a Juneteenth Harmony Meeting, bringing together over 50 community members and organizations.
  2. Produced a culturally affirming Guiding Process for Community Advisors manual, which outlines generational trauma-informed principles, defines Community Participatory Research (CPR), and explains how to operationalize equity in data collection, centering community voices, and information gathering.
  3. Conducted a Community Listening and Learning Session for individuals at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness.

There are several opportunities for Long Beach Black residents to participate in this important work, with incentives being provided.

These include:

  • Community Listening and Learning Sessions
  • Community Health Participatory Mapping exercises
  • The Community Survey
