There's a lot happening in Long Beach! First off we want to invite everyone, especially our LGBTQ+ community, to participate in the visioning event for the LGBTQ+ Cultural District. This LGBTQ+ Cultural District is envisioned as the Broadway Corridor between Junipero and Alamitos Avenues.

We are also excited to announce that the Long Beach City Council unanimously approved the City’s purchase of a Southern California Edison Company property in Downtown Long Beach. The building will host the Long Beach Police Department’s crime lab, administrative office and training space for the Department of Energy Resources, and serve as the new location for a revitalized Long Beach Senior Center.

Mark your calendars, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services will begin offering the bivalent COVID-19 boosters to everyone 5 years old and older.

Community Encouraged to Attend LGBTQ+ Cultural District Community Visioning Event on October 2
We are hosting a community visioning event for the LGBTQ+ Cultural District on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bixby Park Community Center. LGBTQ+ community members are encouraged to attend this outreach event to learn more about the development of the LGBTQ+ Cultural District, which is envisioned as the Broadway Corridor between Junipero and Alamitos Avenues, and to participate in the community visioning process focused on celebrating the contributions of the Long Beach LGBTQ+ community.
Long Beach City Councils Approves City Purchase of Southern California Edison Company Building in Downtown
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the Long Beach City Council unanimously approved the City’s purchase of a Southern California Edison Company property in Downtown Long Beach. The building will host the Long Beach Police Department’s crime lab, administrative office and training space for the Department of Energy Resources, and serve as the new location for a revitalized Long Beach Senior Center.
City to Begin Offering Bivalent COVID-19 Boosters to People Ages 5 and Older
Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services will begin offering the bivalent COVID-19 boosters to everyone 5 years old and older. On Oct. 12, the Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer bivalent booster to include children ages 5 to 11 and the EUA of the Moderna bivalent booster to include people ages 6 to 17.
The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed three cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A H5 (avian flu) in two Canadian geese and one Black-crowned Night-Heron near El Dorado Park. Additional sick and dead wild birds were also found in the area. The virus has previously been detected in birds in California, but the Long Beach cases are the first in Los Angeles County.
The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services recently expanded eligibility for the monkeypox (MPX) vaccine. This decision is in alignment with Los Angeles County and in effort to provide equitable distribution and increase access of the MPX vaccine.

Long Beach Public Library to Debut City’s First Filipino American Literary Festival on October 22
Next Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, Long Beach Public Library will host the Liwanag Literary Festival, a free event that will highlight Filipino American stories and literature in partnership with local bookstore Bel Canto Books.

Twenty California-based Filipino American authors and poets will come together for a day of author readings, panel discussions and book signings and share with attendees the beauty of the Filipino American experience. October is nationally recognized as Filipino American History Month and “liwanag” is Tagalog for “light.”
Long Beach Public Library Hosts Khmer, Come All Program Series Celebrating Our Cambodian Community
This fall, the Long Beach Public Library will host Khmer, Come All – a program series celebrating the local Cambodian community featuring a variety of in-person programs at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library and one virtual event. Each program will highlight different aspects of Cambodian culture, including history, food, craft traditions, a cultural workshop and a film screening. Khmer, Come All will take place on select days beginning Saturday, Nov. 5 through Saturday, Dec. 3.
Long Beach Public Library Showcases LinkedIn Learning for the Month of October
The Long Beach Public Library is showcasing LinkedIn Learning for the month of October. LinkedIn Learning offers high-quality courses and videos focusing on business, technology and computer programming and creative disciplines like design, music, website development, user experience, digital marketing and other high-demand fields of learning.
Don't Miss Out on the 26th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour
The 26th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour will take place on Saturday, October 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery. Professional and volunteer actors will present the stories of the people who made up Long Beach's past and who now rest in these historic cemeteries.
Don't Miss Out on Orizaba Park's Trunk or Treat Event!
The community is invited to the free Trunk or Treat Halloween Carnival at Orizaba Park, happening Friday, October 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Check out spooktacular decorated cars for treats and enjoy a Kid's Zone with moon bounces and carnival games.
Board of Water Commissioners Appoints First All-Woman Leadership
The Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners made history Thursday, October 13, seating the first all-woman board leadership in department history. Gloria Cordero took the gavel as president, Naomi Rainey took her seat as vice president and Gina Rushing Maguire as secretary. The new commissioner roles mark the first time that all three leadership positions have been held by women.
Long Beach Marks Five Straight Months of Water Savings
Long Beach residents and businesses achieved the state’s conservation goal for the second consecutive month, saving 15 percent in September.  September marked the fifth straight month of water use reductions in Long Beach; the community reduced by 4 percent in May, 11 percent in June, 14 percent in July and 15 percent in August compared with the same months in 2020.  

Long Beach’s numbers compare favorably to statewide water use, which saw a 3 percent reduction in May, an 8 percent reduction in June and a 10 percent reduction in July. California water use data for August and September has not yet been released. Read more

Port of Long Beach PHOTOPROGRAM Exhibit Happening in October
Photographs from the Port of Long Beach’s PHOTOPROGRAM will be on exhibit in the lobby of the Port Administration Building, 415 W. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, from Oct. 5-31, in conjunction with October's Arts Month. The gallery is open weekdays only from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Port of Long Beach’s PHOTOPROGRAM is an annual partnership with the Arts Council for Long Beach. Port staff shared photographic techniques and gave local professionals and amateurs a chance to apply what they learned on a harbor tour.

The City of Long Beach and Office of First District Councilwoman Mary Zendejas proudly present the seventh annual Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, Celebration – a free, family-friendly celebration of life in remembrance of loved ones who have died. Families and friends are invited to take part in the day’s activities on Saturday, Nov. 5, from noon to 10 p.m. in the downtown shoreline area.
Veterans Day Celebration Returns After a Three-Year Hiatus
The City of Long Beach proudly presents the 2022 Veterans Day Celebration, a community celebration honoring U.S. military service members, happening Saturday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Houghton Park.
