Welcome to the October edition of the City of Marion’s Open for Business newsletter.

This month is both National Safe Work Month and National Mental Health month. Use the resources below to take some time this month to check in on both the safety and mental health of your staff. Also in this edition, we look at some upcoming activities at Tonsley and meet an Edwardstown business leading the way in recycling. Are you a interested in the circular economy, or are you a co-worker? We want to hear from you! Read on to find out how you can help us shape some of our programs for 2021.

Revitalisation of the Edwardstown Precinct
Circular Economy and Waste Minimisation
Are you an Edwardstown business wanting to find out more about the circular economy and waste minimisation? 

If yes, the City of Marion would like to invite you to participate in a small focus group of businesses to look at ways to reuse, recycle or reduce industrial waste within the precinct. To find out more email kate.silkstone@marion.sa.gov.au.

This project forms part of a 2020/21 12-month Action Plan, endorsed by Council continuing the momentum of the Revitalisation of the Edwardstown Employment Precinct Project.
Faces of Edwardstown - VDL
A business in Edwardstown is leading the recycling drive by packaging products using wooden pallets, newspapers, and cardboard discarded from neighbouring companies.

VDL Adelaide Spare Parts Store dismantles wrecked vehicles, salvaging everything from seats, engines, bumpers, electronics, gear sticks, and dials before selling them online. Owner Paul Vine is also on a mission to convert the remnants of a 1955 Volkswagen Kombi into an electric vehicle.
Cove Business Hub
What do you want from a co-working space?
The Co-working Incubator at Cove Business Hub has been re-opened for four months and we have loved seeing our local businesses back at the centre.

We want to hear from you! Have you been to a co-working space before? What did you like? We have some exciting things planned for 2021 - but what do you want to see? Share your thoughts through our survey.

How safe is your business from cybercrime?
Impacts of COVID-19 have opened up greater avenues for malicious actors to infect business with ransomware. All businesses can benefit from learning about simple measures to help protect their business from cybercrime.

This information session will include:
  • Phishing and avoiding being hooked
  • Identifying a Ransomware and resources available if attacked
  • Low-cost prevention strategies to protect your business.

Southern Business Mentoring Program
Strengthen workplace wellbeing
For National Mental Health Month, the Southern Business Mentoring Program's Bridget Hogg recently shared an article with our business community.

Are your team stressed, fearful and experiencing loss at the moment? Some employees are reluctant to return to the office. Working from home has plenty of challenges. NASA astrophysicist Amber Straughn tweeted about “how to keep cats from accidentally commanding spacecraft”! It’s time to look at what we can do to proactively improve wellbeing.

HCBA's annual Christmas Twilight Markets, showcasing our local businesses, are coming to the Cove Civic Centre on Friday 13 November. Showcase your wares, or come and enjoy the atmosphere, make an early start on some christmas shopping or just meet up with friends for a bite to eat and some browsing.

National Safe Work Month
In Australia, October is National Safe Work Month - a time to make your commitment to improving safety and health in your workplace. This year’s theme, Work Health and Safety through COVID-19, acknowledges and reflects the wide-reaching impacts of COVID-19 on Australian businesses, employers and workers. Visit the National Safe Work Month website for resources to help you promote work health and safety in your business.

nbn Business Fibre Zones
Businesses in the City of Marion will benefit from NBN Co’s next phase of network investment.

Much of the City has been included as part of new nbn Business Fibre Zones which will provide businesses with access to nbn’s premium direct fibre product - Enterprise Ethernet – at no build cost and significantly reduced wholesale prices. This will allow small to medium businesses access to a product once only available to enterprise customers. It will benefit businesses needing committed speeds and moving large data volumes. Businesses in these areas can use the ‘Check Your Address’ function on the nbn website to see if they are eligible and the contact their provider to place an order.
Arts Recovery Fund
The Department of the Premier and Cabinet, through Arts South Australia, has launched the $10.2million Arts Recovery Fund to create employment for professional practicing artists living and working in South Australia.

The Fund is a new initiative that prioritises collaboration and partnerships between artists and arts organisations to foster the evolution of arts practice in a COVID-safe environment.
Venture Dorm scholarships
Are you a young founder with a business idea that you're ready to build into a business?
We are offering five people a place in the Venture Dorm Pre-Accelerator Program to make it happen. You just need to be someone who lives, works or plays within the City of Marion council area, aged 18-25, with an idea you’re itching to make happen.
Tonsley Innovation District
Tonsley Walking Tours are back
The City of Marion’s free walking tours of the Tonsley Innovation Precinct are back up and running. Meet one of our volunteer guides for a walking tour of Tonsley and its mixed use precinct design, supporting businesses wanting to innovate, grow, go global and move up the value chain. Learn about how Tonsley Innovation District is bringing together Australia’s smartest businesses with residential and community living.
Energy Summit Comes to Tonsley
The Future Energy Summit brings together energy thought leaders and energy experts with South Australian businesses, with the intention to share ideas and collaborate on energy solutions for business. The Future Energy Summit's next workshop, Energy Reliability, will be on Thursday 5 November at 10am.

Tonsley recently launched a new website that includes a range of features to help promote the Tonsley brand as development on the innovation district continues. Learn about Tonsley and its community through the online directory, or browse the masterplan utlising the interactive map.

Marion Gardening Showcase
Residents, businesses and local groups are invited to share photographs and stories about their gardens for a chance to win one of three $100 gift vouchers. Marion’s first gardening showcase will celebrate the green-thumbed community by shining the spotlight on veggie patches, flower beds, plants and trees.

Newsbank offers readers access to more than 650 news sources from around Australia, including a number of popular News Corp. and Fairfax Media titles, which are not currently available through the Library Network’s state-wide subscription to PressReader.
