Since the horrific school shooting in Parkland, the courage, resilience and indomitable will of the
survivors to fix what’s broken in our system has awed the entire country. Change is possible and these young people and their parents have shown us that.
During the last Commission meeting among several items aimed at addressing safety in our schools, I sponsored an item to offer the Parkland survivors the services of the City’s lobbying team. I traveled to Tallahassee to make the introduction and offer whatever support I could.
These young people inspired me to continue the fight here at home. In this week’s Commission meeting, I will propose our City legal team research all legal avenues for challenging the state’s preemption on local gun regulations – including filing a lawsuit.
I’d like to note, during Women’s History Month, that many of the most prominent advocates for common sense gun reform have been women – from the students to the mothers, teachers and many others. If we follow their lead to making our communities and schools safer, we can’t go wrong.
Everyone is welcome to City Hall on Thursday. Thank you for staying informed and involved. Please follow the commission meeting on Twitter @kenrussellmiami or watch live for the full session online at
