Storm Watch: Be Prepared - review monterey.org/stormcenter
Are you prepared for this week's major storm? Here is what we know, and tips on getting and staying prepared:
  • Strong, gusty and damaging winds are forecast to develop tonight. Yesterday's High Wind Watch has been upgraded to a Warning, with wind gusts up to 60-70 MPH! Conduct a home safety evaluation to make sure potentially wind-borne objects are secure and prepare for the possibility of power outages.
  • Due to the upcoming atmospheric river and high likelihood for debris flows, parts of Highway 1 near Big Sur will be closed with barricades and signs. Please avoid the area.
  • Monterey County Sheriff's Office has issued an Evacuation Warning for the Carmel, River and Dolan Fire burn scars. Areas within two miles downslope of those areas are at risk of debris flows. If you are unsure if you are in an evacuation zone, visit the evacuation map at bit.ly/2MpXkgU. The National Weather Service is predicting 8-10 inches of rain over the Santa Lucia Mountains and Los Padres National Forest in Monterey County.
  • To register for emergency alerts, visit alertmontereycounty.org or text MCWINTER to 888777.
  • City of Monterey provides free, fill-your-own sand bag stations at all three fire stations in Monterey and at the Pacific Grove fire station.
  • Refer to monterey.org/stormcenter for what to do before, during, and after a storm.
