A moment of silence - 500,000 American lives lost to COVID-19
|
|
The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus topped 500,000 on Sunday. To put in perspective, this number of deaths represents the population of Atlanta or Sacramento. President Biden ordered the flag of the United States to half-staff from February 22-26, 2021 in honor of the 500,000 Americans lost to COVID-19. He is also encouraging Americans to join in a moment of silence at sunset. The Presidential proclamation reads, in part:
As of this week during the dark winter of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 500,000 Americans have now died from the virus. That is more Americans who have died in a single year of this pandemic than in World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War combined. On this solemn occasion, we reflect on their loss and on their loved ones left behind. We, as a Nation, must remember them so we can begin to heal, to unite, and find purpose as one Nation to defeat this pandemic. Read the full proclamation.

We have a final answer - Del Monte and Washington streets!

What a fun way to interact with your community - historical photo location guessing. Last week we posted this photo of downtown Monterey from the 1950s and guessed it was taken at the corner of Tyler and Bonifacio, but asked our readers to verify. Several subscribers reached out with important details that clarified we were wrong. The intersection in this photo is actually Del Monte Avenue and Washington Street. The biggest give-away was the Buick dealership on the right of the photo behind the sign. It was called Graham Buick. On the near side of the intersection across from Graham’s was Miller’s U-Haul, then past that was Three Star Market. Many thanks to Bob and Melinda Scardina, Tom Russo, William Whipple, and David R. for the fun, local history lesson!

Key Things to Know About COVID-19 Vaccines - from the CDC: Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting COVID-19. Experts also think that getting a COVID-19 vaccine may help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get COVID-19. But while COVID-19 vaccines can keep you from getting sick, scientists are still learning how well vaccines prevent you from spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 to others. So even after vaccination, we need to continue using all the tools available to help stop this pandemic as we learn more about how COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions. Although the vaccine supply is currently limited, the federal government is working toward making vaccines widely available.
