Trivia Tuesday: Japanese-American History in Monterey
Trivia Tuesday: What is that building next to the Monterey Sports Center and Jacks Park, with its distinctive Western False Front architecture?

Answer: Today we want to shine a light on the contributions of our Asian American and Pacific Islander (APPI) communities: Nearly 100 years ago, this building was constructed with $100 in seed money from a Tokyo prince. It became the epicenter of Monterey’s former Nihonmachi (Japan town) neighborhood, housing our chapter of the Japanese American Civil Liberties League, the nation’s largest and oldest Asian American civil rights organization. This hall was a center for community events and a venue for providing legal and social services to immigrants from Japan and community members, including language and judo classes, Buddhist observances, weddings and much more. In the early 20th century, most fishing boats were Japanese owned. These pioneering fishermen started a thriving abalone fishery using innovative copper diving helmets. Our local Japanese community were also devoted to baseball, which bonded local Japanese and Sicilian families. The building is now a historic landmark in Monterey and houses artifacts from our Japanese community’s storied history.
