Happy National Dolphin Day and Wildlife Wednesday!
Jump for joy! It’s National Dolphin Day and Wildlife Wednesday! Many dolphin species visit our NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This is a Risso’s dolphin, which is very active on the surface and lives with groups of 10 - 30 animals. Sometimes they can form “super pods” of hundreds or even thousands of individuals! They can dive up to 1,000 feet and hold their breath for 30 minutes. They are also one of the most heavily scarred of cetaceans. Scientists believe they’re from social interactions and tussles among themselves or contact with prey, such as squid and octopus or marks from sharks and lampreys. We love them and all of our dolphin visitors! Photo credit: Daniel Bianchetta via Monterey Bay Whale Watch
