National Nurses Day and National Hospital Week
National Hospital Week and Nurses Day are an opportunity to highlight our hospitals, health systems and health care workers and the innovative ways they are supporting the needs of our community members, especially during this pandemic. Thank a nurse, doctor or health care worker this week for their efforts to keep us safe, get us vaccinated, care for patients and getting us through this unprecedented time.
Throwback Thursday: Historic Map of Monterey County
For today's Throwback Thursday feature, check out this awesome 1877 map of Monterey County, shared today by the Library of Congress' Geography and Map Division on Twitter! You'll see that David Jacks was a major landowner at the time, and Pacific Grove's Point Pinos Lighthouse is still shining bright. Zoom in at go.usa.gov/xHEvp.
Wildfire Preparedness Week: Drought Grows in the West
Just one week ago, much of central California was in the less critical "severe drought" level. Released today, the federal United States Drought Monitor map shows increasingly dire drought conditions throughout California, and shows that the entire Bay Area region is now in "extreme drought." We have been seeing back-to-back dry water years and conditions are expected to deteriorate as we get into the hot summer months. The potential for wildfire is concerning, according to the map's authors.

Be prepared for wildfires by maintaining 100 feet of "defensible space" around your home, creating an emergency supply kit and evacuation plan, and signing up for emergency notifications from Alert Monterey County and following the City of Monterey on Twitter. Learn more tips at readyforwildfire.org.
