Seniors' Agenda Network Summit
Envisioning an Age-Friendly Santa Clara County 3.0
12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center
17000 Monterey Road

The changes facing Santa Clara County -- whereby 2030 one in four will be 60 years or older -- is the topic of the Seniors' Agenda Network Summit.

Twice a year, the Seniors' Agenda Network Summit brings together nearly 200 professionals, aging advocates, and elected officials to actively engage in meaningful learnings to strengthen our community for older adults.

"Envisioning an Age-Friendly Santa Clara County 3.0" is the topic and will be presented by the keynote speaker Don Weden. Weden is a retired Principal Planner for the Comprehensive Planning Section of the Santa Clara County Planning Office.

"We are pleased to have Don speaking at the summit," said Jim Ramoni, Director of Aging Services, "Drawing on his 34 years with Santa Clara County Planning, which includes managing the last comprehensive revision of the County's General Plan, he has a wealth of information and insights on how to make our community more age friendly."

Ramoni added that Weden encourages local communities to prepare for the significant changes, challenges, and opportunities that will be coming our way in the years ahead - and that will greatly impact our lives and those of our children and future generations."

WATERING IS LIMITED TO
WEDNESDAYS ONLY

Water is always a precious resource in Morgan Hill and with this in mind, our permanent watering restrictions have been designed to best manage the City's potable water supply. These restrictions will help us avoid or minimize the effects of drought, climate change and the unreliability of the imported water infrastructure that serves the City of Morgan Hill.
From November 1, 2018 through March 31, 2019, watering is limited to Wednesdays only.

  • Irrigation is allowed before 9 AM or after 7 PM
  • Watering is limited to no more than 15 minutes per station
  • Watering returns to the three day a week schedule on April 1, 2018
Complete rules and restrictions can be found in   Water Waste Ordinance No. 2236. Customers can report water waste  online or by calling the Water Waste Hotline at 408-310-4195. Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Workshop

Housing Trust Silicon Valley's Small Homes, Big Impact Program is hosting another Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) workshop!

ADUs are secondary units to the primary single-family home on a lot. They are a great option to provide housing to family members like aging parents and adult children as well as friends to help they stay in this high-cost area. It also provides an opportunity for homeowners to create wealth.

This is a FREE event where a panel of experts will answer the following five questions for you:

  • Can I build an ADU on my site?

  • How do I get an ADU permitted?

  • How do I put a team together to design and manage construction?

  • How do I pay for the ADU?

  • I'm a landlord, now what?

2019 Point-in-time Homeless Census and Survey Needs Volunteers

The 2019 Point-in-Time Homeless Census and Survey will take place in Morgan Hill on Tuesday, January 29th from 4:30am - 10:00am, and we are looking for volunteers to help count!

What is the Point-in-Time Count?

All jurisdictions receiving federal funding to provide housing and services for homeless populations through McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grant are required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to conduct a biennial Point-in-Time count of unsheltered and sheltered homeless individuals and families. The count must happen within the last ten days of January and all data must be tied to one night.

Why does the Point-in-Time Count matter?

Point-in-Time Count data are the primary data used for federal funding allocations and national estimates of homelessness. The numbers reported by your community are used by the US Interagency Council on Homelessness and all federal departments including Housing and Education. PIT Count numbers are also most often cited by local strategic plans, state, county and city government and the media.

VTA is conducting community engagement on a

Why?
To help improve the transit agency's long-term financial stability, VTA must find an appropriate and difficult balance between spending its fixed budget on ridership and coverage goals. These service modifications have the potential to save VTA approximately $15 million annually, while investing service in high-frequency routes and seamless connections to BART service when it opens.
The draft 2019 New Transit Service Plan is VTA staff's proposal for how to implement the Board's recent direction:
  • keep bus and light rail services at levels comparable to present service levels
  • place greater emphasis on serving and increasing VTA riders; and
  • minimize service reductions affecting residents in South Santa Clara County.
What's next... and where VTA can use your help!

Over the next two months, VTA will hold six community meetings to collect input on the draft  2019 New Transit Service Plan. Meetings will feature a presentation from VTA staff and opportunities for the public to ask questions and provide input to the VTA planning process. VTA will also be meeting with community organizations and neighborhood groups to discuss the plan.

We'd love your help in promoting our 2019 New Transit Service Plan website. The public can:

  • Learn more about the proposed service impacts
  • Get information and/or attend a community meeting
  • Fill out a comment form with feedback or questions

DEVELOPMENTAL ASSET
OF THE MONTH

Asset #7 - COMMUNITY VALUES YOUTH

Tips to Help You Implement Asset #7: Community Values Youth
  • Help youth in your community feel valued by building relationship with them through volunteering, tutoring, baby-sitting and just being friendly.
  • Encourage your youth to get involved in community service activities and programs.
  • Attend a family community event together, such as: an outdoor concert, library events & programs, attend the FREE Morgan Hill Values Youth Event on Saturday, January 26 at the CCC from 8:30am - 12:00pm.
  • Show that you value people who work with youth, and thank them for the work they do.
Visit the  Developmental-Asset-a-Month Calendar for more tips!

Developmental assets are the positive values, relationships, skills and experiences that help youth and teens thrive. Young people with high asset levels are most likely to make healthy choices, while those with lower asset levels are more likely to get involved with negative or risky behaviors like violence, trouble in school, drug and alcohol use and more. The Search Institute of Minneapolis created the developmental assets framework. For more information, visit www.search-institute.org
