On the Rise: Hard Hat Heroes

As the On the Rise series continues, this week’s spotlight is Hard Hat Heroes, a closer look at the Public Works projects, services, and daily operations that keep Oakland Park moving. The article is especially timely as Oakland Park joins communities across the country in recognizing Public Works Week, honoring the teams that maintain streets, sidewalks, facilities, utilities, landscaping, drainage systems, and other essential infrastructure that residents and businesses rely on every day. From road improvements and stormwater upgrades to facility maintenance, beautification, and neighborhood enhancements, Public Works plays a central role in supporting safety, reliability, resilience, and quality of life across the city. Read the full article and the entire Spring/Summer 2026 issue of On the Rise on the City of Oakland Park website. Residents and businesses should have received their copy of the newsletter in the mail. Additional copies for homes, businesses, or HOAs are available by emailing mycity@oaklandparkfl.gov.

Oakland Park Students Receive First Friends of the Library Scholarships

The Friends of the Oakland Park Library presented its first scholarships to two Oakland Park high school students during the recent City Commission meeting. Nia Chantal Brown and Alexandre Gervaud, both Oakland Park residents, each received $1,000 to support their next step after graduation. Brown graduated from Nova High School and will attend FAU in the fall. Gervaud graduated from Somerset Academy High School and will attend Harvard University in the fall. The Friends of the Library created the scholarship this year to support local students pursuing college, community college, trade school, or other post-secondary paths. The selection process considered academic achievement, service, civic engagement, and essays about each student’s connection to Oakland Park and the Library. The City thanks the Friends of the Oakland Park Library for investing in local students and helping create more opportunities for young people in Oakland Park.

Fort Lauderdale Force Main Project Update

The Fort Lauderdale force main project is nearing completion. All sewer main connections are complete, and restoration work is underway along Park Lane East/NE 38th Street. Asphalt restoration is taking place at NE 16th Avenue, and Park Lane East is closed at NE 16th Avenue while crews restore the intersection. The roadway remains open to local traffic, allowing residents to continue accessing their homes and driveways. This work is part of a regional effort to modernize and strengthen critical underground infrastructure. Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as this important project moves forward. For more information and project updates, please visit the project page on the City website.

NE 13th Avenue Sidewalk and Drainage Improvement Project Update

Progress continues on the NE 13th Avenue Sidewalk and Drainage Improvement project.

This week, drainage crews will continue installing stormwater infrastructure on NE 35 Street and at the intersection of NE 13 Avenue and NE 39 Street. Sidewalk crews are also expected to begin driveway apron work and make final adjustments in areas where sidewalk construction has been completed. Construction will continue block by block, with drainage work first, followed by sidewalk installation and restoration. Residents may continue to see equipment, excavation, and material deliveries as work moves through the corridor. When complete, the project will add new sidewalks and create safer, more accessible routes through the neighborhood. It will also improve stormwater management through new drainage structures and swales that address long-standing drainage concerns and strengthen the City’s response to heavy rainfall and future storm events. Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the project team so staff can review the plans and provide additional information. Get contact information on the city website.
