Wondering why some storm drains have fabric underneath the grates? Near construction sites, you may spot a variety of erosion control mechanisms that are designed to

trap sediment, preventing this debris from flowing into storm drains when it rains. Sediments

such as sand, dirt, and other debris can severely pollute local waterways, leading to decreased water quality, biological productivity and ecological health. Sediment clouds the water, blocking underwater plants from necessary sunlight and degrading fish habitats. Next time you see cloth under a storm drain, consider the important role these mechanisms play in keeping our waterways clean and healthy. Please visit respectourwaters.org/erosion-control to learn more about how you can help prevent sediment pollution in our rivers and lakes.
