Housing, Health & Human Services (H3) Update
|
City tax passes to build affordable housing. The City Council, by unanimous vote, approved a one tenth of one percent sales tax in July to build, support, and maintain affordable housing. Poulsbo is the first City, in Kitsap County, to pass an affordable housing tax, and this action gives our City the ability to control how these funds are used to help Poulsbo residents. Housing, Health and Human Services continues to work with the H3 Committee, and other Councilmembers, to show how a small City can make a positive difference in this area. Looking forward to working with Housing Kitsap on our first project.
Back to School—and the Importance of Vaccinations. COVID-19 vaccines are critical to keeping kids healthy once classes begin in the fall and to protect their classmates, school staff, and family members. Everyone 12 and older is eligible for a COVID vaccination. It takes around two weeks after the second dose for your body to build up full protection against the virus, which means kids should get their first dose at least five weeks before the first day of school. Housing, Health and Human Services is working, this month, with Northpoint Church, Peninsula Community Health Services, and Kitsap Public Health to encourage back-to-school vaccinations, and encourages parents to text their zip code to GETVAX (438829) to find vaccination locations.
Poulsbo Police Continue to Link Policing and Health Services. Congratulations to Poulsbo Police for being awarded a Washington Sheriffs and Police Chiefs grant to continue their police navigator program. Navigator Jamie works with people, referred by officers, who need help connecting to behavioral heath and other health and human services. This valuable program is in its fourth year and has inspired similar programs throughout the County.

Johnson Way is newly paved and back open to traffic. New roundabout curbs, sidewalk and splitter island are completed at Johnson Way. The final segments of the non-motorized tunnel have been installed. Stream #1 and Stream#2 culverts are in place. Bjorgen Creek fish barrier enhancement is under way. WA Department of Fish and Wildlife safely and successfully relocated 55 fish downstream of the fish culvert construction area. The Westside Well Iron and Manganese Treatment project is well underway. This project will construct a treatment facility to remove iron and manganese from the water from the Westside well which provides water to the Olhava area. Iron and Manganese are secondary contaminates of concern and while they do not pose any health risks, they cause discolored water have other negative aesthetic qualities. This project will remove them at the source.
The project was advertised earlier this year in February and the contract was awarded to the low bidder McClure and Sons. The contractor began work in June and has completed the backwash tank and is beginning to work on the site piping. The City also completed a rehab of the well motor and pump prior to the start of this project.
Construction will continue through this fall and winter, however no impacts to the public are anticipated.
