Residential Food Waste Recycling Takes Effect in Redding! | |
The City of Redding’s Residential Food Waste recycling program has officially begun, requiring City of Redding Solid Waste customers to take a different approach to food waste disposal in their homes. Instead of putting food waste into the gray trash bin, it will now be required to be placed into their green organic waste recycling bin.
Senate Bill 1383 aims to reduce the amount of organic waste deposited into landfills by 75% by 2025, rescue at least 20% of disposed edible food, and redirect it to people in need. Unused food from restaurants, school cafeterias, and hospitals will be redirected as part of SB 1383's Commercial Food Waste component, which took effect in 2021.
All organic waste items—those capable of decaying—will be placed in the green organic waste recycling bin instead of in the gray trash bin. Items like fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and filters, meat, and plate scraps can go into the green bin. Yard trimmings can continue to be placed into the green bin.
Food waste accounts for about 30% of what is thrown away. Collecting organic materials in the green bin means they can be sent to the composting facility instead of the landfill. Composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions, like methane, that would otherwise be produced if the organic material were to go into a landfill.
Effective immediately, all City of Redding residents must comply with SB 1383. Organic materials will no longer be accepted in gray garbage bins.
All plastic bags, including those labeled as biodegradable or compostable, are prohibited in the green bin. Brown paper bags and newspapers can be used to collect food scraps and can be placed into your green bin.
Please remove all packaging, like aluminum cans, plastic wrap, styrofoam, coated paper, twist ties, rubber bands, etc., from any items that will be placed into your green bin.

The City of Redding to Host a Public Meeting on the Redding Riverfront Specific Plan During the Regular Meeting of the Redding City Council on Tuesday, January 16th
On Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, at 6 pm in the Redding City Council Chambers, during the regular City Council Meeting, the City Council will hear a presentation from City staff regarding the Redding Riverfront Specific Plan and will consider accepting the draft “Redding Riverfront Specific Plan Update Draft Visions & Guiding Principles Framework.” If the Council accepts it, the “Vision & Guiding Principles Framework” will provide the basis for future concepts, ideas, policies, and programs considered for inclusion in the updated Riverfront Specific Plan. The public is invited to appear before the Council during the meeting to share their thoughts.
The “Vision & Guiding Principles Framework” was developed based on significant feedback and input from the community. In August of 2023, City Staff hosted a Community Open House and interviewed interested parties at the Redding Civic Auditorium to solicit ideas from community members regarding a vision for the future of the Redding Riverfront. All comments received from the Community Open House were compiled, and emerging key themes were developed for further discussion and refinement by the Community Coalition group.
The Community Coalition consisted of 20 members from the community, representing a broad range of interests and backgrounds. The Community Coalition held four in-person public meetings throughout October and November 2023 at City Hall, and the public was invited to attend. The meetings were also live-streamed, and recordings of the meetings are available for viewing on the project webpage.
“The development of the ‘Redding Riverfront Specific Plan Vision & Guiding Principles Framework’ has been a community-driven effort, and we are grateful for the efforts of everyone involved. It will be exciting to complete this initial phase of the project and now move forward with the development of plan concepts, ideas, and policies that align with the community’s vision for the riverfront,” says Jeremy Pagan, Director of Development Services with the City of Redding.
A copy of the draft Vision & Guiding Principles Framework is available on the project webpage.
