Tax Due Date Amendment

On July 17th, the Saco City Council approved an amendment to tax due dates in Saco. With the delay in the state budget and the changes to state funding for the schools, the municipal tax commitment was delayed to ensure we could commit the lowest tax rate possible and minimize the financial burden a higher tax could impose on our residents.

The tax due dates have been amended as follows:
- First half of taxes due on September 8, 2017 (interest accruing September 11, 20 17)
- Second half of taxes are due on March 9, 2018 (interest accruing  March 12, 2018)
- The EZ Pay program will be continued in fiscal year 2018, with eight monthly payments. For more information about this program, call the Finance Department at (207)283-3303.

FY18 taxes will be committed the first week of August and tax bills will go out the second week of August. Thank you for your patience!

Pedestrian Safety Forum

On July 25th, the MaineDOT, Bicycle Coalition of Maine, and the City of Saco held a  public meeting as part of a state-wide effort to address the recent spike in  pedestrian/vehicle crashes in Maine. Thank you to all who attended!  There was a great turnout and a lot of participation!  At this meeting, the attendees identified intersections or roads that they felt were the most problematic or dangerous for  pedestrians.  The locations that the majority of participants identified are the intersection of Jenkins Road and Buxton Road, the intersection of King Street and Route 1, and insufficient crosswalks and sidewalks on the Ferry Road.

Additional data will be compiled from the sheets the participants completed to give us a better picture of the areas that we will need to work together to address in the future.  The MaineDOT, Bicycle Coalition of Maine, and the City of Saco will be using the information gathered as the first step in a multi-step process.  The next steps involve site visits to these locations, conducting feasibility assessments, and developing mitigation plans.

At this meeting, participants agreed on the need for a pedestrian and bicycle committee.  If you are interested in forming this committee, please email Emily Roy at [email protected].  Your continued input is important to us.  Please visit our website and sign up for notifications regarding pedestrian and bicycle safety to receive information in the future and like us on Facebook at FB.com/SacoMaine

AARP Grant Funding Sought - Danica Lamontagne

One major project I have been involved in this summer was writing the application for AARP's Community Challenge grant. If we receive this grant, funds will be used to install historic signage along the Saco and Biddeford RiverWalk Loop Trail that details the history of the surrounding mills...
