City of Santa Cruz Earns

2023 Prohousing Designation

On August 4, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the designation of the City of Santa Cruz as a Prohousing Jurisdiction. To achieve the designation, 30 points were required—the City of Santa Cruz scored 57 points across four different application criteria categories: Favorable Zoning and Land Use, Acceleration of Housing Production Timeframes, Reduction of Construction and Development Costs, and Providing Financial Subsidies.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development’s (HCD) Prohousing Designation Program provides incentives to cities and counties in the form of additional points or other preference in the scoring of competitive housing, community development, and infrastructure programs. “I’m thrilled that we now have 30 communities that have achieved the Prohousing designation,” said HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez. “The cities and counties are

leading the way by reducing unnecessary barriers and red tape that discourage

new housing production, instead they are signaling to developers that are ready

to build more housing faster.”

Governor Gavin Newsom said, “These cities are showing the local leadership California needs to tackle our state’s housing crisis. They stand in stark contrast to the handful of locals who are failing their constituents and refusing to help California families struggling with runaway housing costs. We will continue to celebrate cities like Rohnert Park, Santa Cruz, and South San Francisco while holding bad actors accountable with executive action and in the courts when necessary."

FireFish Grill Reopens After Kitchen Fire Halts Operations

After repairs from damages sustained in a kitchen fire in April 2022, FireFish Grill on the Santa Cruz Wharf reopened in June—just in time to catch some of the summer tourism season. The restaurant has been a Santa Cruz staple since opening in 1980, although it changed names a handful of times. Like all restaurants on the Santa Cruz Wharf, it is known for having epic views, but most importantly for its local specials.
