Clam Chowder Cookoff Sets Fundraising Record

This past weekend’s 43rd annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off was one for the record books! This year's event raised an all-time record $133,000+ for Parks & Recreation. The event also hosted 86 competitors between the amateur and professional competitions. Huge kudos and thanks to Tremain Hedden-Jones and the Recreation and Administration teams who made it happen. Big thanks to the Beach Boardwalk and all the local celebrity judges, including Congressman Jimmy Panetta, Councilmember Scott Newsome, and many more.

Homelessness Response: Safe Parking Programs

This year, the City developed a Safe Parking Program for people who live in oversized vehicles.

The Long-term Safe Parking Program provides space for oversized vehicles at the National Guard Armory. This program provides 24/7 parking and participants may stay up to six months. Case management, housing navigation, health care, and hygiene services are provided on-site. Space is limited for this program, and participants must adhere to a code of conduct. To learn more, please call 831-515-8665 or email <[email protected]>.

The Overnight Safe Parking Program provides space for oversized vehicles in City-owned lots. This program provides overnight parking, and participants can stay up to 30 days with the possibility of an extension. Hygiene services and refuse disposal are available on-site. Space is currently available in this program, with the ability to expand if necessary. Participants must adhere to a code of conduct. To enroll, call 831-420-5093 or email <[email protected]>.

Parking spots are pre-assigned to enrolled program participants, and every vehicle will receive an overnight parking permit. Vehicles parked in this lot without an overnight parking permit may be ticketed and towed. Learn more about the City’s Homelessness Response efforts on the City's Homelessness Response website.

Important Updates Regarding Steamer Lane and West Cliff Safety

Steamer Lane Caution: The cliff at Steamer Lane is unstable. Please avoid the cliff edge and the area in the lineup below. Recent erosion may impact wave quality for high tide south swells, as falling rocks directly affect the usual wave-breaking zone during these conditions. Coastal erosion is natural and created Steamer Lane's renowned waves. While the short-term effects on wave quality are unfortunate, the long-term impact remains unknown. We're working on a plan to address the instability of the cliff. Stay tuned for updates.

Please report any other observed cliff changes and avoid walking close to the cliff edge on any part of West Cliff to ensure everyone's safety.

Community Conversation: Join us this Thursday from 5:30-7pm at the London Nelson Community Center for a conversation on the 50-year Community Vision for West Cliff. We're discussing community feedback on the best ways to manage our dynamic coast.

Visit www.cityofsantacruz.com/westcliff for more information, including the draft vision, meeting information, and how to provide feedback on the vision if you can't make Thursday's meeting.

Preapplication Review Request Submitted for

Mission Street Development

On February 8, 2024, the Planning and Community Department received a request for a pre-application review of a potential development to combine three parcels — 100, 106, and 110 Mission Street. The project would involve the construction of a three-story mixed-use development consisting of seven two-story, two-bedroom townhouses above four commercial tenant spaces and parking.

One of the parcels is zoned community commercial (CC), where a mixed-use development is permitted. However, the other two parcels are zoned public facility (PF) and designated as Community Facility (CF) in the General Plan. Neither PF or CF zoning allows for commercial or residential uses. For this reason, the project would require a general plan amendment and rezoning of two parcels. In addition, a design permit, lot line adjustment, and slope development permit.

Additional permit requirements may be identified during the course of the pre-application review. The project will be

subject to compliance with objective design standards and is not required to provide on-site parking due to its location within ½ mile of a major transit stop.

The site is not located within the downtown plan area — the level of environmental review will be determined based on the resources at the project site and the impacts of the development. A pre-application review is intended to assist the applicant in the preparation of the formal application. It also allows for an initial staff review of a potential project. There is no public hearing or decision with a pre-application review. However, a community meeting will be required during this phase for compliance with the City’s community outreach policy for planning projects. The feedback provided may result in alterations to the project design. Additional updates will be provided if and when a formal application is submitted following the pre-application review process. Ryan Bane is the planner for the project.
