Stabilization of West Cliff Drive is Underway

The construction of four infill walls has started at our West Cliff Stabilization Project with Granite Construction. Excavation equipment was mobilized to the site last week, and work began on October 17 at the 1016 West Cliff Drive project location with clearing and grubbing. The first phase of excavation at the 1016 site is scheduled to continue through the end of October 2023.

Expect roadway conditions to change during construction, including temporary detours and full closures. This project will build concrete infill walls where specific portions of West Cliff Drive were impacted during the January 2023 storms. Read more on the Public Works Projects website.

City Crews Complete Woodrow Avenue Clean-Up

A City project team took on an October 19 clean-up of Woodrow to improve safety and beautify the area.

The team included:

  • Parks crews.
  • The wharf team.
  • Golf course team.
  • Superintendent Travis Beck.
  • And others who coordinated the work to make a big impact at Woodrow.

Parks Supervisor Mike Godsy said, "We closed seven blocks of Woodrow medians, spread over 80 yards of mulch, weeded, pruned, grubbed, raked, and leaf-blew everything in sight. The Woodrow Avenue corridor now looks well-kept and cleaned up and is much safer for pedestrians and vehicle traffic. Many thanks to the Neighborhood Parks team! We couldn't have done it without you!"

Treatment Plant Teams Takes Part in Great ShakeOut

Last week, the Graham Hill Water Treatment Plant (GHWTP) team participated in the Great ShakeOut drill, a global initiative promoting earthquake safety. As part of the preparedness efforts, updates were made to the GHWTP emergency action plan by ensuring that all facility maps within the buildings were current and accurate. Participation in the event fostered valuable interactions as various groups posed insightful questions and provided feedback, which will contribute to enhancing our earthquake response strategies in the future.

Environmental Compliance Presents Pollution Prevention at Water Harvest Festival

Our Pollution Prevention booth at the Water Harvest Festival at Chanticleer County Park on Saturday was a hit! Environmental Compliance Inspectors guided about 75 kids with interactive Water Pollution Detective games. The youth enjoyed wearing official lab coats and goggles during Microscope, pH experiment, and Imhoff Cone experiment activities — all of which underscored how to prevent water pollution. We also spoke to many adults, with about 225 activity table visits.

Resource Recovery Offers Pumpkin Collection!

From November 1 – 10, Resource Recovery offers collection of pumpkins, both carved and uncarved! Pumpkins don't belong in the yard waste container and instead will be collected as part of the Food Scrap Diversion Program. Be sure to discard candles or decorations into the trash — only pumpkins, stems, and guts can be included with food scraps. If your pumpkins fit in the food scrap bin, place them there. If they don 't fit, place the pumpkins on the ground next to the food scrap bin. For more information, visit the food waste website.
