City & Community Collaboration Improves Neary Lagoon with New Walkway, Signage, Balancing Accessibility and Ecosystem Protection | |

This week, the City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation and Public Works Departments, in partnership with the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History (SCMNH), celebrated the completion of improvements to the Neary Lagoon Wildlife Refuge Interpretive Trail.
Councilmember Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson, Miss Middour's 3rd-grade class from Del Mar Elementary, and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Jane Mio took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new floating walkway and interpretive signage, which enhances the visitor experience while supporting habitat conservation and environmental education.
We invite community members, nature enthusiasts, and families to explore and support Neary Lagoon, one of Santa Cruz's natural treasures. Here’s to enjoying our open space in a way that honors and protects its natural beauty.

Santa Cruz Police Department Welcomes Six New Officers
We are thrilled to introduce Pedro Hernandez, Jacob Owings, Andrew Gutierrez, Morgan Sandoval, Carl Lopez, and Gretchen Fullmer as the newest additions to the Santa Cruz Police Department family!
It is our honor to officially swear in these outstanding individuals who have chosen to serve and protect the Santa Cruz community. Officers Hernandez, Owings, Gutierrez, Sandoval, Lopez, and Fullmer—thank you for your commitment to public safety. Please join us in congratulating these officers as they begin their journey in law enforcement!
The new officers will undergo a couple of weeks of orientation before being assigned to our 18-week Field Training program. During this program, rookie officers will be paired with a Field Training Officer and evaluated daily on their performance. Upon completing the Field Training program, the new officers will be assigned to a patrol team to work as solo beat officers.

Provide Nourishment to Local People Through the Second Harvest Art Auction
The time has come for our annual Second Harvest Art Auction! The pieces up for auction have all been made by our extremely talented City staff. The auction starts at noon on September 18th and will close on September 26th at noon. Let’s help raise money for a great cause in our community!

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Offers Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic | |

Registration will be in late September for a low-cost Spay and Neuter Clinic offered by Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter from November 15 – 17. Space is limited — contact the shelter to reserve your spot!
For cat spaying or neutering, the cost will be $150 ($75 for those on public assistance). Dog spaying or neutering will be $300 ($150 for those on public assistance). The clinic will also offer vaccinations and microchips.
The Santa Cruz Animal Shelter offers pet adoptions seven days a week from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. To meet and greet your potential four-legged family member, arrive before 4:45 PM. Adoptions are first-come, first-served! Please view available animals on the shelter website and then visit the shelter at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz to turn in your application.

Building West Cliff Resilience and Community Vision | |

The City of Santa Cruz, with the support of Farallon Strategies, recently concluded a year-long project to develop the 50-year Community Vision for West Cliff. This document provides a comprehensive framework that will contribute to the long-term vision for West Cliff.
For the next phase of this project, the City will work with the community and stakeholders to develop a 5-year Roadmap for West Cliff, aligning it with the 50-year Community Vision and current City work. The final roadmap will be presented to the Council by January 2025.

On October 5, 2024, the Santa Cruz Sister City Committee will host a 50-year celebration of the Santa Cruz and Shingu, Japan, sister city relationship. The event includes music, entertainment, a pop-up market, access to the Museum of Art & History exhibits, speeches by members of the Shingu mayoral delegation, and remarks by state & local representatives.
Tickets and cocktail attire are required for this event. The ticket includes entry to the Museum of Art & History and entertainment, drinks, food, and refreshments throughout the celebration.
