Pacific Station Relocated — New Customer Center Opens

Free Fares through February 25

The METRO Pacific Station complex, located at 920 Pacific Avenue, will close for demolition and redevelopment. METRO moved transit operations to its temporary River Front Transit Center on February 12.

METRO’s Customer Service booth and ticket sales also opened on February 12 to the new Customer Experience Center located at 603 Front Street in Santa Cruz. Over a dozen operator trainees will be onsite at River Front to assist customers in finding their buses.

To help ease this transition for riders and acquaint them with the temporary transit center, METRO will offer free fares throughout its bus system from February 8 – 25, 2024.

Changes in Transit Operations started February 12

The METRO Downtown Transit Center Interim Operations plan will use curbside space on Soquel Avenue, Front Street, River Street, and River Street South to create three new bus stops (Areas 1, 2, and 3) and create multiple bus layover spaces.

METRO plans to board and deboard passengers at three bus stops (Areas 1, 2, and 3) located at River Street South and Soquel Avenue.

  • Area 1
  • Located at the River Street South and Soquel Avenue intersection
  • Routes Served: 18, 19, 20, 40, 41, 42
  • Area 2
  • Located at the existing stop on Soquel Avenue between River Street South & Front Street
  • Routes Served: 17, 35
  • Area 3
  • Located at the existing Front Street stop alongside CVS Pharmacy
  • Routes Served: 1, 2, 3, 4, 90X

METRO’s customer service booth and ticket sales will also be relocated from Pacific Station to a temporary Customer Experience Center at 603 Front Street, across from CVS. It will be open to assist customers in-person Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., or by phone at (831) 425-8600.

METRO riders will have access to a public restroom near the Soquel Front Parking Garage at 601 Front Street facing Soquel Avenue, located next to Oswald’s Restaurant (121 Soquel Avenue) and across the street from New Leaf.

Supporting Public Health Policies Through Wastewater Epidemiology

Kudos to the Santa Cruz Wastewater team for participating in the National Wastewater Surveillance System with Biobot Analytics! Water department staff contribute to an important aspect of our public health in this Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sponsored effort to monitor community health through wastewater analysis.

The Wastewater Operations team and Laboratory collected 267 samples in 2023 and plans to continue the partnership in 2024. The samples are initially processed in our lab and then sent to Biobot Analytics, where the molecular work is done to analyze specific pathogens (i.e., COVID-19 and RSCV) present in sewage.

This analysis provides data on disease trends within the community more accurately than clinical data can provide. The reports can help local public health departments, as well as the CDC and the State of California, develop plans and allocate resources for managing public health. This collaboration showcases Santa Cruz's commitment to protecting our community and embracing cutting-edge solutions for public health.

Damage to Sewer Line Fixed!

A tree fell and broke an aerial sewer line over the gulch near Hagemann Court during the storm on Sunday, February 4. Public Works crews jumped into action to set up a bypass pipe to keep sewer service running while they worked with a contractor to repair the broken line.

The repairs were successfully completed over the weekend. The fallen tree and other vegetation were cleared so that a crane could install the new pipe. The pipe weighed over 100 pounds and was installed across a 33-foot-deep section of the creek. Thank you to neighbors for your patience while our crews worked extended hours to finish the repairs.
