Repairs Begin from January 2024 Winter Storms

Read More: Storm Safety!

Our team has already been busy in 2024 responding to the early January storms. We saw some damage to our West Cliff construction sites, but the Granite Construction team is already back to work, and we expect to see project sites wrapping up construction in mid-February and March.

920 West Cliff

  • The wall has reached its top elevation.
  • This week, the team will be backfilling the back of the wall and placing an 8-ton rip rap at the front and sides of the wall.

932 West Cliff

  • The wall is expected to reach its top elevation this week.
  • Granite crews will pour concrete for the last section of the concrete wall. This concrete pour will begin at 7:00 AM on Friday, 1/19/24.

1016 West Cliff

  • This week, Granite will backfill the adjacent sea cave that collapsed due to the recent storm.
  • They will also continue to build formwork for the retaining wall.

1030 West Cliff

  • The design team is discussing and reviewing possible wall designs for this site.

The storms also significantly impacted our Santa Cruz Wharf. A determination has yet to be made at the Wharf, and the team is actively conducting evaluations to formulate the appropriate recommendations.

As we embark on this rainy winter season, localized flooding and significant swell events are possible. Stay informed by following us on social media for regular updates. Pay close attention to signage, road closures, and barricades. Your safety is our top priority – make it yours!

Crucial Flood-Fighting Repairs on the San Lorenzo River West Levee

On January 8, the City of Santa Cruz Public Works Department began making crucial flood-fighting repairs on the San Lorenzo River west levee. Recent storms caused minor damage along an 800-foot stretch of the western levee near the river outlet. The Public Works team is on it, fixing displaced rip rap and soil erosion at 18 separate locations.

The path will be closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic while repairs are made. Please plan alternate routes to ensure a smooth commute! Please refrain from entering the work area and respect barricades for your safety.
