Fire Safety Comes First

"WE ARE A FIRE FAMILY and will support our neighbors to the east without hesitation,” said Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya this week. “We are assisting in fire safety operations in Las Vegas because the local department needs to rest, recover, and take care of their own families. We are just lending a helping hand wherever needed.”

Twenty-five firefighters were dispatched along with a fleet of vehicles. Chief Moya and his chiefs are retaining sufficient safety vehicles in Santa Fe, coordinating staff schedules, and deploying our new cadet class here to ensure all needs within Santa Fe are met.

Santa Fe Emergency Management Director Brian Williams reports that he and Specialist Kyle Morgan are responding to resource requests and coordinating with the State and County Emergency Operations Centers, the Red Cross, and other partners to address emergency sheltering and longer-term housing of evacuees. Morgan is being deployed to the NM Emergency Operations Center.

WHILE THE PROFESSIONALS are doing their parts, this would be a good time to develop a personal fire safety plan, using these resources:

Prepare — Greater Santa Fe Fireshed Coalition – All-around wildfire preparedness.

Alert Santa Fe | City of Santa Fe, New Mexico (santafenm.gov) – Sign up for City and County emergency notifications (text/call/email).

NM Fire Info | New Mexico Fire Information Information on wildfires and fire restrictions.

City residents can call Porfirio Chavarria, the Fire Department's Wildland-Urban Interface Specialist, to request in-person assessments for wildfire hazards around their property; (505) 955-3119.

DONATIONS of dry goods are accepted at Fire Station 5 only on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The All Together New Mexico Fund is accepting monetary donations; The Food Depot Disaster Relief Fund and the State Employees Credit Union are accepting both dry goods and monetary donations.

MAYOR'S NOTE:

We're All In

This Together

This week has been a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness, training, and equipment. We do it to protect ourselves. We do it to help our neighbors.

Folks in Santa Fe are concerned for their friends and families who are hit hard by the fires. The City is assisting in every way possible in fighting the fires and safeguarding communities in and around Las Vegas.

Our outstanding Fire Department is on the front lines. Emergency Management is engaged with the regional response. Every department in the City is on alert, from our Seniors team providing meals, to our Community Services and Facilities team preparing places where our neighbors can safely stay if their own homes are threatened.

Every day we meet to plan how we can provide effective support to those who need it now or might need it soon. These meetings start with operations and logistics. But they are  always based on compassion and concern. There’s great competence. There’s great inspiration.

That's a reflection of the community we represent. We are here to help our neighbors, just as they would help us if we were in danger. The towns may have different names and boundaries. As a community, we are connected and united.

This week is another reminder: We’re all in this together.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborwoods

On Friday, April 29, the City’s non-profit partner Keep Santa Fe Beautiful (KSFB) launched the Neighborwoods pilot project to increase Santa Fe's tree canopy by targeting residential neighborhoods. The launch date coincided with the City’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day with a tree planting in the Plaza, and the one-year anniversary of the launch of the TreeSmart Santa Fe initiative.
