“WE'VE MOVED QUICKLY to place experienced leaders on our team who expand our ability to provide quality services to all Santa Feans and who will help us move the City forward,” said City Manager John Blair yesterday in announcing key personnel actions.
Manuel Gonzales (above, left) has been named Director of Information Technology and Telecommunications (ITT). Mr. Gonzales has 29 years of experience in the IT field and most recently served as interim ITT director for the City and as an ITT Program Manager.
Melissa McDonald (above, right) has been named Parks and Open Space Director within the Public Works Department. Ms. McDonald had been serving as interim director for over a year. She has worked for the City since 2015 and previously served as River and Watershed Manager. Ms. McDonald has deep local experience in horticulture, landscape management, water conservation, stormwater management, and is now leading Parks, the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe, the Municipal Recreation Complex, and the Stormwater Office.
Daniel Maki has been named Senior Advisor/Neighborhood Engagement Coordinator. In this role, Mr. Maki will act as a liaison between City Government leadership and local communities and organizations to ensure real-time communications and feedback on City policies and procedures. He will act in an advisory role to City Manager Blair, Mayor Alan Webber, and the City Councilors. Mr. Maki has broad experience working in government, having served as Director of Boards and Commissions for Governor Bill Richardson and as a Legislative Assistant for then-U.S. Representative Ben Ray Lujan, among other roles.
These appointments follow other personnel actions the City has taken in recent months as part of an aggressive campaign to fill vacancies in a tight labor market. Find more details and reminders here about other recent hires.
Reminder: The City is still hiring!
Please share the listings with job-seekers who would be good candidates to join Team Santa Fe and enjoy the robust benefits package and opportunities for public service, training, and advancement that come with municipal employment. Incentive: The thousand-dollar hiring bonus is still being offered!

MAYOR'S NOTE:
The Family of
Santa Fe
|
These days it’s popular to talk about organizations that are like a family: A football team is like a family, the actors on a TV show are like a family, a tech startup is like a family.
Santa Fe isn’t like a family. We actually are a family. A real family. A family with deep roots, strong branches, full-hearted connections and affections. We live together, work together, and play together.
And when we lose someone from our family, we mourn and grieve together. We celebrate their life together and we embrace them together. That’s what it means to be a family.
We’ve lost two beloved family members lately, and as much as it hurts, it helps to come together to celebrate them.
We think first of Sev Gurule. He was as Santa Fe as you can be, the heart and soul of City Hall and City government for 28 years, a generous and genial man who gave so much to the city. He was a musician, a mentor, and a helper to everyone he encountered.
And we lost Mayor Javier Gonzales. He was a home-grown, home-town hero, a true and devoted son of Santa Fe, a leader who inspired us all, guided our community with a loving hand, and cared deeply about everyone in our city.
Our larger family—including the direct families of these two great and good men—is greatly saddened by their loss and enormously grateful to them for making our lives better. May peace be upon them and may their memories be a blessing.
We are a family and we embrace them and their direct families and send our love and condolences.

What questions would you like to ask the candidates? Your survey responses will help inform the selection. Please take the survey (in English or Spanish) by February 25. For now, the branch will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. The beloved Midtown neighborhood institution has some new furnishings, features, and artwork to show off for the occasion.
