Highlights from the Week of July 18, 2022

AUG 15: New Trash Pickup Days

You might have a new trash and recycling collection day beginning the week of August 15, 2022. The Environmental Services Division (ESD) is implementing changes to residential trash and recycling collection, and will pickup on a four-day schedule, Monday through Thursday, after the change goes into effect. Almost all residents in the Friday collection zone will move to Thursday, and most other residential customers will also see a change to their collection day. Commercial collection schedules will not be affected.

The changes are a component of a multi-year route optimization project that ESD has worked on with its technology partner Rubicon to balance the number of homes on each collection route and make the routes more efficient by reducing the miles traveled over the course of the week.

Residential customers should look for notification about the changes in their July utility bills. ESD will also send a direct mail reminder in the beginning of August before the changes go into effect.

Tree Limb to Bee Hotel

The City has a new functional piece of art along the Santa Fe River: the Poetry Pollinators' Bee Hotel! The hotel/sculpture showcases poetry, provides educational information about pollinators, and offers habitat for Santa Fe's solitary native bees. It was crafted from a 2000 lb. section of a dying cottonwood that had to be removed from the Rose Park last fall. See it for yourself near the intersection of Camino Escondido and East Alameda.

New Library Division Director

Santa Fe Public Library is pleased to announce their new Division Director, Margaret Neill! Margaret has been working in public libraries for 20 years, and most recently served as Library Administrator for the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library in Las Cruces. She is – of course – an avid reader, and brings a wealth of library experience to her new role. We join Community Services Director Maria Sanchez-Tucker and the rest of the library staff in giving her a warm welcome!

Grow Your Own Veggies

Did you know that we have community gardens in parks around the city? From Cerro Gordo, to the Railyard, Frenchy's Field, Maclovia, Rancho Siringo, and more, these shared growing spaces are a great way to test your green thumb even if you don't have a private yard. Plots are available for rent for a $25/month fee that covers water use – but spaces can be limited because they're so popular! Call or email Jessie Benavidez in Parks for more info and current availability.

Saturday Spray-Down at SWAN

If the recent summer weather has you feeling hot and dry, we have a possible solution: the Santa Fe Fire Department is having a Spray-Down at SWAN Park on Saturday, July 23. The Spray Down will begin at 11 a.m. and will last for about 10 to 15 minutes, so bring your kiddos in their swimsuits, towels, and lots of smiles. (You might also pack a few snacks for a picnic, but that's not required!) Hope you can join us for this fun way to beat the heat.
