Summer Camp
Success Story!
|
After a 2020-21 school year that was disrupted by the pandemic, the City recognized an urgent need to provide families with childcare, and children with fun, safe environments for in-person activities. This summer, City personnel in the Santa Fe Youth Program cared for, taught, played with, and entertained 423 children in our community at five Santa Fe Public Schools sites and the GCCC.
“Providing the youth in our community with a safe, fun, educational environment to stay active and promote positivity for themselves and among others is the greatest service we can provide,” says Melissa Bustos, Youth Program Manager.
The seven-week program focused on recreational socializing designed to keep kids active and engaged for up to nine hours a day, five days a week.
Fifty-eight staff members, including 50 seasonal employees, were assigned to the various sites. Thanks to their strict adherence to the COVID-safe guidelines in place -- the sometimes rambunctious children were required to wear masks -- the entire summer program was completed with zero positive COVID cases for any of the 423 participants. That’s one way to spell s-u-c-c-e-s-s.
“To redesign the youth program in the transition to reopening after a year in COVID-19 quarantine says a lot about the City’s commitment to our youth,” says Gino Rinaldi, Acting Recreation Division Director.

MAYOR'S NOTE:
Stop COVID Before it Sets Us Back
|
It’s time for us to take a serious look at how far we’ve come, where we are and what comes next with COVID. Since last March, Santa Fe has led the way in fighting COVID. From the Santa Fe Promise to the mask mandate to vaccine equity, we’ve risen to the challenge.
Because of that dedication, we’ve had a Santa Fe summer: Kids at our camps, music at SWAN Park and on the Plaza, the Fuego, the Opera, traditional markets, all remind us why we love Santa Fe.
But now, the Delta variant is surging. We’re called upon to take up the COVID challenge again. We need to go back to the COVID-safe practices that worked to protect us: hand washing, careful socializing, distancing, and mask wearing while indoors for extended periods. And if you or someone you love or know has not yet been vaccinated, now is the time. We know that it halts the spread of the virus; we know it makes breakthrough cases far less severe; we know it saves lives; we know it keeps Santa Fe safe.
School is starting; let’s protect our kids. We know how to do it, we've done it before, and it's time to do it again. Together, for Santa Fe.
