City of Santa Fe

Weekly Wrap

Highlights from the Week of October 17, 2022

Celebrating New Solar Carport

Last week, the City and partners celebrated the completion of a new solar carport at the Southside Santa Fe Public Library Branch. It is one of seventeen solar arrays that are being installed at various City facilities. With the completion of this carport,  just over one megawatt of solar has already been installed – and another megawatt is currently under construction.

The solar installations are taking place in conjunction with Facility Improvement Measures (FIMs) in the buildings, like new water-saving fixtures, that will reduce overall water and energy consumption. The projects are estimated to save more than $750,000 per year in utility costs in total, with approximately $500,000 per year of the savings resulting from solar. The project is also estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 6,742,000 pounds per year – the equivalent of taking 588 cars off the road.

Congrats to Road-E-O Winners

The City had not one but two team members place in the national Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Road-E-O this past weekend. At the event, solid waste equipment operators from around the country competed on driving obstacle courses designed to test the critical skills used daily for safe, efficient trash and recycling collection. Congratulations to Patricio Lopez and Albert Valdez from the Environmental Services Division!

Midtown IS Moving Forward

Last night, the City's Planning Commission unanimously recommended the approval of measures facilitating and underpinning the proposed redevelopment of the 64-acre Midtown site. The Governing Body is expected to vote on the plans next month. For more information and to view the Midtown Redevelopment Plans, visit the Midtown website.

Farewell to Roque's Carnitas

Roque Garcia, of "Roque's Carnitas," is retiring after over 30 years as a Plaza Pushcart vendor. He was the first pushcart vendor and instrumental in the program's inception in the 1980s, and has been a constant presence on the Plaza ever since. THANK YOU Roque for everything you've contributed to our community over the years – you'll be missed!

Celebrate Fall at La Farge Library

You're invited to the La Farge Library Harvest Party on Saturday, October 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. Join friends and family to celebrate fall and the first growing season in the Children's Garden by painting pumpkins, trying roasted corn, sipping on hot chocolate and cider, sharing stories, and more! District 4 Councilor Jamie Cassutt will lead a special story time, and costumes are encouraged.

Hope to see you there!

There's a lot going on in the City Different!
