Santa Fe First in State to Allow Paramedic Administered Overdose Followup Treatment

In response to the increase in opiate-related deaths and overdoses, the Santa Fe Fire Department’s (SFFD) Alternative Response Unit (ARU) and Mobile Integrated Help (MIH) office have developed a pilot program to administer pre-hospital (paramedic-administered) buprenorphine to appropriate patients in the field.

Patients will then be connected to longer-term rehabilitation and medically assisted treatment services.

Buprenorphine, which lowers a person’s desire for opioids and gives relief for withdrawal symptoms, has long been a key tool in addiction treatment. Its use by emergency services is relatively new.

Currently, no pre-hospital agencies are providing this service in New Mexico. SFFD was granted a special skill approval for the administration of this project.

If the patient agrees to participate, they will be administered the medication and transported to community partners that can provide referrals to prescribing physicians. The ARU is staffed with an experienced EMS Captain and an experienced case manager with in-depth knowledge of harm reduction.
