New Fire Trucks = Safer City
|
Santa Fe got safer today with the launching into service of two new trucks at Fire Station 4 on Arroyo Chamisa Road. Fire Chief Paul Babcock (left) introduced a new brush truck for fighting wildland fires, and Ladder 4, which gives the department capacity to reach four stories high. He points out that this will make businesses feel more secure about growing and locating here. The truck is also "clean," the Chief said, meaning free of carcinogens; cancer is a leading case of death among firefighters.
Kyra Ochoa (at podium), Acting Director of Community Health and Safety, remarked that she has a personal appreciation of that feature, because her grandfather, a New York City firefighter, died of lung cancer at age 57. She also thanked the station for saving her husband's life by responding to a cardiac event he suffered not long ago.
"This new equipment is our way of saying 'thank you' for responding to danger every day," said Mayor Webber to the many firefighters in attendance. "This couldn't come at a better time, as we celebrate a year of community safety."
Assistant Fire Chief Brian Moya (next to Mayor) explained the historical lore behind the ensuing Push Back Ceremony, which dates to the horse-drawn days of the late 1800s. The well-attended and festive event epitomized both proud firefighting traditions and the state of the art in equipment. See the videos on the SFFD Facebook page.

MAYOR'S NOTE:
Local Film & TV Industry is Sizzling
|
By Mayor Alan Webber
This week I had the distinct pleasure of talking with Jennifer LaBar-Tapia, the director of the Santa Fe Film Office, a joint City-County production. According to Jen, we're on track for a record-breaking year of film, TV, and digital productions. Even better, we're booked all the way through 2022, with 35 productions already in the works or in the pipeline. You know some of the titles shot here in Santa Fe: Roswell, Them, and News of the World starring Tom Hanks. Mario Lopez just wrapped Holiday in Santa Fe, coming out at Christmastime.
This is great for the economy, great for tourism, great for the residents of Santa Fe. It means clean jobs, lots of spending, and some show business sizzle—and speaking of sizzle, check out the cool "sizzle reel" in the WebberCast.
When it comes to movies, TV, and digital entertainment, Santa Fe is the place to write, produce, and make a movie or TV show. Roll the credits!

Recycling Truck Makeovers

The Environmental Services Division's recycling trucks are getting a makeover! New "Recycle Right" stickers (pictured) are being installed on all residential and commercial recycling trucks to remind residents to recycle correctly – the items pictured in the new stickers represent the materials that do belong in your blue recycling cart.
