Join us for the family-friendly Halloween Carnival, October 27 at Signal Hill Park! Child-friendly costumes are encouraged, and don't forget a bag to collect candy! Pre-sale wristbands are $3, on sale from October 15 - October 26 at the Community Services office at City Hall, the Youth Center, and the Signal Hill Public Library. Wristbands purchased day-of are $4. Wristbands are required for all activities (ages 2+). Call 562-989-7330 for more information.
Community Meeting: Living With Wildlife in Urban Areas
Come out on Thursday, October 18 for a community meeting and discussion with Ted Stevens, Long Beach Animal Care Services Manager, on the challenges of living with wildlife in urban areas. Topics of discussion will include laws surrounding wildlife protection and tips to mitigate wildlife concerns. Open to the public - we ask that you RSVP. The discussion will be held at the Discovery Well Park Community Center, 2200 Temple Ave., from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Please RSVP to 562-989-7330 by Monday, October 15, 2018.
Of Note: Changes Coming Soon to Online Utility Bill Pay
City of Signal Hill residents will soon have a new-and-improved utility bill payment system! If you pay your bill online or through automatic payments, you will need to create a new online account and set up a new payment method when the new system is launched. No need to take action yet - stay tuned for updates on the new payment system launch, coming soon! 
Announcing Online County-Wide Homeless Outreach Portal

A brand-new, county-wide online portal allows residents to easily submit requests for homeless outreach. The Los Angeles County Homeless Outreach Portal (LA-HOP) makes it easier and more efficient for the public to request help and have it dispatched to connect homeless persons with outreach workers.  Visit to learn more.
Fall Bulky Item Clean-Up Week: November 5 - 9

EDCO's Bulky Item Clean-Up Week gives residents the opportunity to place unwanted items out at the curb that are too large or heavy to put inside trash collection carts. Items like broken appliances, furniture, old mattresses, and more can be picked up free of charge. The Fall Clean-Up will take place the week of November 5 - 9 on your regularly scheduled curbside pickup day. Simply place your items out at the curb by 7 a.m. that day. Residents living in apartment or condominium communities can take part in the Fall Bulky Item Clean-Up Week by calling EDCO at 562-597-0608 to schedule a special curbside pickup.

Spooky Pirate Storyteller
Join us Monday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. as we travel the seas with Pirate David through songs and eerie pirate tales! This event is free and for ages 3 and up. Space is limited, registration is required. Register at the Library or call 562-989-7323.
Creepy Crawlie Story Time
This Halloween story time is packed with fun songs, movement, stories, and of course, touchable creepy crawlie animals! Join us on Thursday, October 25 from 10 - 11 a.m. This event is free and for ages 3 and up. Space is limited, registration is required. Call the Library at 562-989-7323 or stop by to register.
Day of the Dead Celebration
Head over to the Library on Friday, November 2! We'll watch Disney Pixar's Coco, enjoy face painting, crafts and more. Refreshments will be served. Space is limited, register at the Library or call 562-989-7323. Sponsored by the Friends of the Signal Hill Library.
Mini Drone Flying Program
This program is designed to familiarize kids with new technologies by teaching them how to fly drones, and to learn the programming mindset. Held Wednesdays in November from 3-5 pm. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Call 562-989-7323 or stop by the Library.
Virtual Reality Countdown to Halloween
Wednesdays in October from 3 - 5 p.m., we'll have fun and spooky virtual reality experiences available at the Library! Ages 10 and up. Pre-registration is required. Register by calling 562-989-7323 or visiting the Library.
Support the SHPD's Pink Patch Project
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Signal Hill Police Department is proud to announce its participation in the Pink Patch Project. Participating Signal Hill Police Department personnel will be wearing pink patches on their regular uniforms during the month of October. You can support the Project by purchasing your own pink patch or a t-shirt. Patches are $10 each and t-shirts are $20 each (available in medium - XXXL).

City of Signal Hill Receives Two Beacon Spotlight Awards

The Beacon Program, sponsored by the Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative, honors the efforts of local governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, and promote sustainability. This year, the City of Signal Hill received two Spotlight Awards – one for energy savings and one for sustainability best practices. Congratulations to the City and the Sustainable City Committee for their efforts in advancing this worthwhile cause.  
Over 50 Volunteers Attend Fall Mayor's Clean-Up

Approximately 53 volunteers turned out at the Fall Mayor's Clean-Up, held on September 22! Together we filled an entire dumpster (and then some) with litter and discarded items. Thank you to everyone who came out to help keep Signal Hill beautiful. Stay tuned for details on the next Mayor's Clean-Up!
GD Bro Burger's Hue Nguyen Nominated for KCET-PBS Local Heroes Award

Congratulations to Hue Nguyen, owner of Signal Hill's GD Bro Burger, on his nomination for a Local Heroes Award! The program brings attention to outstanding members of the community who are making significant contributions to improve and enrich the lives of others, right here in Southern California. The son of Vietnamese immigrants, Nguyen transitioned from a successful career in the financial services industry to lead GD Bro Burger. Question of the Month: How Do I Register to Vote?

There is still time to register to vote before the California General Election, November 6! You must register by Monday, October 22 to be eligible for that election. You can register online or by mail. To register online, visit To obtain a voter registration form by mail, please contact the City Clerk’s office at 562-989-7305.  You may also pick up a registration form at City Hall, 2175 Cherry Avenue, during regular business hours.
