Court Rejects South Fulton Mayor's TRO Against City Council
|
|
An attempt by City of South Fulton Mayor khalid kamau to get a temporary restraining order against the South Fulton City Council was rejected yesterday by Fulton Superior Court Judge Eric K. Dunaway. The suit was part of an effort by kamau to remove the city attorney without council confirmation, a power the new mayor does not possess, and continued a pattern of efforts to overstep his limited authority under South Fulton’s city charter. Below is a joint statement from the City of South Fulton City Council following the judge’s action.
"Mayor kamau has shown a complete disregard for our city charter and for the rules under which we operate. He has repeatedly made unsubstantiated allegations; disclosed documents under pending investigations; attempted to fire or remove employees with no authority to do so, and filed a lawsuit against the City Council and city attorney that will cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. He has abused his largely ceremonial role as mayor and has vastly overstepped his limited authority under our form of government. He has failed to recognize that his inappropriate behavior damages the perception of the city.
"His outright lies, frivolous lawsuits and allegations of infighting give fodder to outsiders eager to find fault with our relatively new city. We demand that the mayor stop wasting taxpayers’ dollars and resources on baseless lawsuits and focus on doing the work of the people.
"The image of our city is too important to be hijacked by a false narrative, insinuations and tactics. We reject them out of hand, and demand that our mayor demonstrate a respect for the law, for his colleagues and staff. We demand that he put the interests of the people of South Fulton above his own."
