Governor Jay Inslee released updated standards for airports in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to help protect the health and safety of workers, passengers and crew in the aviation sector. Additionally, Inslee extended a proclamation related to the Washington residency requirement for public university tuition waivers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week Spokane Regional Health District provided updated guidance for local school districts to begin phasing students into school buildings and Spokane Public Schools has released its reopening plan. This aligns with similar guidance provided across the state. It indicated that this should occur slowly and methodically, with strong adherence to safety protocols, strict cohorts, and contact tracing if necessary. The youngest students and those with the highest need should be the first groups considered for the phasing process.  

Today, alongside Boone Culter, and Steve Danyluck, Spokane Fire Department was humbled to host the dedication ceremony of the Spartan Axe. The Axe was forged by Ben Hayhurst in Elk, Washington from material from the fallen World Trade Center in New York City. Its purpose is to increase awareness of peer support and suicide prevention among the first responder community. Reinforcing, it is okay to not be okay. It is okay to reach out for help when you are struggling.

Spokane Transit Authority is proceeding with construction on stop locations for its Central City Line on West Main Avenue between Division and Bernard. While the work makes it more challenging to visit this area, the businesses need your support. Work is expected to continue for another 4 weeks or so until the end of October.

After 40 years with Parks & Recreation, Mike Turner is retiring. If you’ve enjoyed the Ferris Perennial Garden in Manito Park over the last few decades, you’ve got Mike to thank. Mike says it’s the people that he’ll miss most. “A big part of my social life is just meeting the people that come visit the garden,” says Turner.

Mike's co-workers know him for being a team player, having a contagiously positive attitude, and great passion for his work. “People come here from all over the world and I do not want to disappoint them says Turner. They have high hopes when they come here.”

Delta Air Lines has announced new daily nonstop service from Spokane International Airport (GEG) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The once-daily flight will begin on November 20, 2020. Tickets are now on sale at delta.com.
