The Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Coalition stopped by City Hall to declare October Domestic Violence Action Month and share resources with those experiencing domestic violence in our community.

YMCA Celebrating 140 Years
YMCA of the Inland Northwest is celebrating 140 years of service! The Y has provided a safe and nurturing environment for children of all ages, giving parents peace of mind while they work. I was one of those parents, my child received childcare at the Y. Congrats to our community’s oldest nonprofit!

Congratulations Gold Girl Scout Julia
I had a wonderful visit with Gold Girl Scout Julia! As part of her Gold Award project, she helped pass a bill promoting the use of pollinator-friendly shrubs and bushes in landscaping. The bill was signed by Governor Jay Inslee in March 2024, and Julia was named Washingtonian of the Day!

Mission Ave. Bridge Work Will Impact Traffic
Drivers in east Spokane will experience traffic impacts as the Street Department resurfaces the Mission St. Bridge.
- Tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 23, eastbound Mission Ave. will be closed between Perry St. and Napa St., while westbound Mission Ave. will be reduced to one lane.
- Thursday, Oct. 24 westbound Mission Ave. will be closed between Napa St. and Perry St., while eastbound Mission Ave. will be reduced to one lane.

SPD Building Trust with Youth
Reserve Officer Ed Richardson was asked by Shadle Park High School student Colton to provide a special Despicable Me Homecoming invitation to his friend Emma. The young man wanted to do something different and came up with the idea of Officer Richardson picking him up in a police car. The mission was a success!

NextCycle Washington Circular Accelerator Program
The NextCycle Washington Circular Accelerator Program supports innovative businesses focusing on reuse, repair, recycling, and composting. Participants engage in a six-month program that includes consulting, a two-day Accelerator Academy, funding guidance, networking opportunities, and pitch development to prepare their projects for investment. Applications are due Monday, Nov. 4.

Upcoming Racial Restrictive Covenants Workshops
More than 6,400 homes in Spokane County have a racially restricting covenant. The Spokane Public Library is partnering with the EWU Racial Covenants Project and Spokane County Auditor’s Office to host workshops helping inform homeowners how to identify racially restrictive covenants in their home’s legal documents and how to remove them!

UHelp Program Needs Assistance
In 2013, the City of Spokane began a program to support households who qualify with one-time emergency financial assistance to help pay for their City utility bills, which includes charges for water, wastewater, stormwater, and garbage collection. The UHelp program is funded through donations with a dollar-for-dollar match provided by a designated Public Works fund of up to $50,000 each year. To continue to serve the need moving forward, more donations are needed.

Downtown Fall Clean-Up Event
As autumn leaves fall, it’s time to refresh and brighten our city! Join the Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) and Riverside Neighborhood Council for a Fall Clean-Up on Wednesday, Oct, 30, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Community members are invited to volunteer in activities including litter pick-up, graffiti removal, and tidying up our beloved downtown. Volunteers will be provided with all necessary tools, and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing like long pants and sturdy shoes. Click here to sign up!

Spooky scenes are happening all over downtown Spokane! On Saturday, Oct. 26, locate each scene and decipher a riddle to earn a bag full of fall goodies. Pick up your Spo-Candy Worksheet at the Numerica Skate Ribbon or Visit Spokane Information Center in Riverfront Park. Look for a sign at each of the ten locations, each scene contains a clue to help you complete the worksheet riddle.
