Spring is here and there is no better place to be than right here in Spokane. There is an endless list of things to do – spend the day at the golf course, visit the newly opened South Suspension Pedestrian Bridge, or take a walk through beautiful Riverfront Park. I encourage you to get outside and take advantage of all that our city has to offer!

Mayor Lisa Brown signed Council Member Zack Zappone and Council Member Paul Dillon’s Family Friendly Festivals Ordinance. This is the first ordinance, Mayor Brown has signed!

Anderson Recommended As CHHS Director
Mayor Lisa Brown will recommend to the City Council at its Monday, April 8 meeting that Arielle Anderson, an experienced local public housing authority and human services professional as well as community collaborator, be appointed as the City’s Community, Housing and Human Service Department Director. Pending City Council confirmation, Anderson is expected to start at the City on Tuesday, April 9. She has been the Director of Housing Assistance for the Spokane Housing Authority since November 2021. Click here to learn more!

Learn Where Your Garbage Goes
The City is offering free Waste to Energy public tours during spring break! Visitors will learn how garbage moves from the tipping floor to the claw, and then to the boiler. Explore where we burn trash at temperatures reaching 2,000 degrees and harness steam to generate enough electricity to power 13,000 homes!
Tours are:
- Monday, April 1, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
- Thursday, April 4, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Minors must accompanied by an adult and be 8 years or older. Small children and infants are not permitted. Reservation required.

Funds To Become Available For Affordable Housing
The City’s Community, Housing, and Human Services Department is providing advance notice that an estimated $3,495,200 in federal funds through the 2024 HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) for affordable housing development will be available to apply for from Monday, April 1 through Wednesday, May 1. The program is intended for affordable housing projects that are highly viable, cost-effective, project-ready (completed within 12 to 18 months), and that leverage additional funding from public and private sources. The Request for Proposals will be posted on the City website on Monday, April 1. Read the advance notice for more information.

Survey Seeks Input On Emergency Shelters
An emergency shelter is a place for people to live temporarily when they cannot live in their previous residence. The City of Spokane seeks input from citizens throughout the region, agencies, and stakeholder groups on how you are affected and what services you would like to see offered. Information from a survey will be used to help inform future approaches to emergency shelters. The six-question survey closes Monday, April 1. Take the survey.

Fair Housing Surveys, Session Avaliable
The City has contracted with Northwest Fair Housing Alliance to assist with the preparation of the 2024 Fair Housing Plan. The plan will be used to identify fair housing issues in Spokane and set goals to overcome barriers to fair housing. Information and public input sessions will be
- Tuesday, April 2, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St. Click here to attend virtually.
- Thursday, April 4, 12 to 1:30 p.m., The Hive, 2904 E. Sprague Ave. Click here to attend virtually.
Surveys are open through Sunday, April 7 for both housing consumers and their advocates as well as housing providers. Take a few minutes to complete a survey to provide input on your experience with fair housing in the City.

Applicants sought for West Quadrant Tax Increment Financing District Committee
The City of Spokane is seeking residents to help advise the City Council on the use of public tax increment funds in the West Quadrant Tax Increment Financing District (West Quadrant TIF), which encompasses a large part of the West Central neighborhood as well as part of the Riverside and Emerson/Garfield neighborhoods. The West Quadrant TIF funds certain public improvements in the district as well as permanent affordable housing. Read the press release for more information!

On the Bright Side
February’s Building Permit Report included 45 single-family residential permits, making it the highest February since 2006 and the most of any month for more than two years. There were 17 multi-family projects proposed with 1,443 units proposed in review at the end of January. The largest project in February in terms of construction valuation in which a permit was issued was the Cambridge Apartment remodel at $1.5 million. It’s shaping up to be another banner year with increased housing opportunities. Click here to watch the permit report to City Council.
