Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
As mayor, I am blessed occasionally to be the one who announces something transformative for our city or a specific neighborhood. After many months of planning, I was thrilled to make such an announcement Wednesday: a new Wayman D. Palmer YMCA, along with a new Inez Nash Park, will be built for the residents of our great city. This is a win for the nearby neighborhoods, a win for kids, and a win for Toledo.

My administration has always put a priority on investing in all neighborhoods, especially those that have been ignored for decades. Whether it’s building this new YMCA, demolishing the old Driggs Dairy, our historic residential roads repaving program, or sending hundreds of kids to pre-K and college for free as part of HOPE Toledo, I’m proud of what my administration has accomplished for neighborhoods in the core of our city.

We value ideas from residents, so I hope you will join us for a public meeting at the Wayman D. Palmer YMCA, 2053 North 14th St., at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 27 to gather your input on the plan for the new facility and park. You can see some renderings posted below that show concepts for the building.

Funding for the $21 million project will come from a combination of sources, including Community Development Block Grant funding, American Rescue Plan Act funding, the YMCA capital campaign, and private sector donations.

The new facility will face Bancroft Street and be built where Inez Nash Park currently sits. It will be approximately 50,500-sqaure-feet, which is about twice the size of the current YMCA building. There will be multipurpose rooms, a demonstration kitchen, a community lounge, gymnasiums, fitness rooms, and an indoor pool. You can watch the exciting announcement at this link.
Home at Last
Earlier today, we celebrated a great milestone for our Home at Last Program, which offers down payment assistance for eligible home buyers. Fifty Toledoans now own homes in the city thanks to this amazing program that we started one year ago, and has been another tool my administration uses to assist our residents, and to create and sustain healthy neighborhoods. We designed the program to help income-eligible residents get over the finish line with down payment and closing assistance. I am happy to say it is working, and I was very happy today to spend some time with our newest Toledo homeowners – including Shirley Hopkin, who was the 50th recipient.

The total down payment assistance given to homeowners is $323,990; the total loan amount leveraged by the program is more than $3.6 million, and the total cost of the 50 homes purchased is $4 million.
9-11 Memorial
Finally this week, I would like to invite all residents to join me and other leaders tomorrow morning for a memorial to mark the 2oth anniversary of the September 11 terrorists attacks. The details are posted below.

Just like everyone who was alive on that terrible day, I recall vividly exactly where I was and what I was doing at 8:46 a.m., September 11, 2001. We will pause to remember the men and women lost on that day 20 years ago.
Solheim Cup
Congratulations to Team Europe for winning the Solheim Cup.

The event was a huge success and another announcement will be coming soon about another large event in Toledo.

"I believe that event is only coming to Toledo because of the work we've done to prepare and the way we succeeded with Solheim," Mayor Kapszukiewicz said.
