City of Vallejo to Request Independent Investigation by California Attorney General’s Office into June 2nd Officer-Involved Shooting

VALLEJO, CA – During a closed session at a Special Meeting of the Vallejo City Council today, the Council unanimously directed the City Attorney to prepare a resolution to request an independent criminal investigation by the California Attorney General’s Office into the June 2, 2020, officer-involved shooting of Sean Monterrosa.

The City will place an item on the June 9, 2020, City Council Agenda, when the Council will publicly vote on a resolution directing City Staff to send a letter to the California Attorney General’s Office. The letter will ask for a thorough and independent criminal investigation into the shooting involving a Vallejo Police Department Officer and Monterrosa, a 22 year-old male from San Francisco.

“Our Council will formally consider asking the California Department of Justice to perform an independent criminal review of the officer-involved shooting of Mr. Monterrosa. Concerns have been raised about this event, and our City will not hide from a thorough review,” stated Mayor Bob Sampayan. “We welcome this additional investigation and recognize the importance of the public’s trust in the outcome of a process.”

The Solano County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation into the June 2, 2020, officer-involved shooting, and the Vallejo Police Department is conducting an Internal Affairs Investigation through the Professional Standards Unit. For additional information on the incident, read a statement issued on June 3, 2020, from the Vallejo Police Department.
