Ventura, Calif. – The Ventura City Council has approved the appointment of Tony Lee as Interim Police Chief, with the decision finalized on December 17, 2024. Lee brings more than 30 years of distinguished law enforcement experience, highlighted by leadership, community engagement, and operational excellence. He will assume the role on December 28, 2024, and serve until a new police chief is hired.
Lee most recently served as Chief of Police at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), leading the largest of the 10 University of California Police Departments for six years. His department served nearly 50,000 students, faculty, and staff, with a daytime campus population exceeding 100,000.
“Tony’s leadership at UCLA demonstrates his exceptional ability to manage complex operations while fostering community trust,” said Mayor Dr. Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios. “His experience overseeing high-profile events, nationally ranked hospitals, and a celebrated athletics program will be a great asset to the City of Ventura during this transition.”
Before joining UCLA, Lee spent 26 years with the Beverly Hills Police Department, rising to second in command. He oversaw Field Services, Investigations, and Administrative Services and often served as Acting Chief of Police. Known for his steady leadership, he commanded the Intelligence Unit and managed high-profile events such as the Golden Globes, Los Angeles Marathon, and Vanity Fair parties.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Tony’s caliber and dedication to public service,” said City Manager Bill Ayub. “His extensive law enforcement experience and proven leadership will ensure our Police Department continues delivering exceptional service to the Ventura community.”
Lee studied criminal justice at California State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s degree in public administration. He then completed executive-level training at the FBI National Academy, Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Senior Management Institute for Police, and the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Point Leadership Program.
As Interim Chief, Lee will oversee the Ventura Police Department, with over 250 sworn officers, staff, and volunteers.
